He's actually always been that way. During TNG he would often bemoan the fact that Picard was such a po-faced bugger, and was always asking if he could do more silly fun things. That's how we got episodes like Captain's Holiday.

As a child I owned cats. They were sure as hell never this tolerant of being puppeteer material. If I tried to make them dance, I'd lose a finger.

I have two cats that would allow this for a time. When I was growing up we had a cat who would have allowed it bit he was a great cat.

Yeah...looks just like him.
