I'm a fan of the Boy Scout motto: " Be Prepared". I live on the Gulf coast; I'm not going to be stuck out the next time a hurricane blows through. Last time, they closed all of the stores three days before the damn thing came through.

Oh, right. Thankfuly, we don't have those disasters over here. I think the worst I ever got was when my street flooded and I got slightly soggy going to the shops for dog food.

Hurricane Katrina made me think it might be a wise thing to have some water and food stocks on hand. Then Rita came through Houston the next year; we didn't have any damage, but it was several days before regular services like stores were back (besides power; mine never went out).

I was deployed to two natural disasters when I was in the military. An ice storm in the Ottawa region and a flood. During the ice storm people in rural areas basically had to survive off what was in the cupboards until the Army could get to them and more than a few died.

I currently live in a rural area (very close to where I was deployed), so I want to be prepared.

Your in Ireland, right? I gather things in Europe are closer together, so it's easier to get essentials if something goes wrong. I'm considering a co-op scheme with the in-laws, they buy half the supplies and in return they can hunker here. Though that would mean I'd have to put up with them.

Yep, Irish. I'm also in a city which contains one quarter of the country's population, so I doubt I'm running out of supplies all that quickly.
