For me, it was simply family discussion. It came to be common knowledge that my father's family was Litvak (technically Lithuanian Jews, but generally used to refer to Jews with roots in Lithuania, Belarus, northeast Poland, etc.) and my mother's family was Galician. There's a lot of crossover and geographical confusion - my dad's dad, for example, was drafted for WWI... by Austria-Hungary - and on my mom's side there's uncertainty over whether the family origins lie in Ukraine, southern Poland, or even further south in Caucasian, Georgian, or Akaghic territory.

More specific information about individuals dating back to the mid-19th cent. comes from oral histories.

Family discussion as well for me. The McAvoys are from Ireland and came during the Potato Famine. My Dad's mother is French Candanian and while his Dad is half Irish half something else. My mother's side is Blackmer and came from England long time ago. No one is sure exactly when but predates 1776. The Blackmers are a bunch of mutts.

My wife is a mutt like that. Her dad's side is all Ukrainian; her mom's side is related to John and John Quincy Adams, and thusly distantly to the Spencers, as well as having some German and a dollop of Unami Leni Lenape.

An uncle contracted HIV in his 30s and spent the rest of his days living in leisure in California, volunteering to help the homeless and depressed, and doing family research. He mailed out his findings and sketches of the old farm before taking a long awaited vacation to southeast Asia. A flu overcame him by the time his plane landed in Taiwan. He got back to America just in time to die. His death bed was the first time he had seen his brothers and sisters in well over a decade.

Bit of both. The Irish ancestry is from talking to family, the uncle fighting in Dublin is from a bit of research after rummaging through an old box of bits.

Not uncommon for the Navy to ship sailor's cars instead of paying the sailors to drive to wherever the carrier may go. It's cheaper.

Also gives a real good indication of truly large that flight deck really is.
