Ok I did this so I could get things sorted out for my next post.
Current battle status:
Strike group one, Breaking the enemy line and landing our land army.
1 - Galaxy class - USS Dakota - Flagship - Crew: Rochey, Monroe
1 - Akira class - USS Impervious - Air support (Destroyed over landing area, splattered onto surface, all hands lost)
2 - Saber - USS Holland (Destroyed by subspace bomb, all hands lost), USS Ravencrest (Damaged)
1 - Defiant - USS Alie (destroyed in dogfight)
27- Falcon Class fighter
Second strike group: Engaging the enemy fleet.
2 - Akira Class - USS Daystrom - Crew: Mikey, Teaos, Thorin, M'real (On fighter), Reliant (Damaged). USS O'Ryan (Damaged)
1 - Nebula - USS Roberts (Heavily damaged?)
2 - Defiant - USS Horse shoe, USS Southern Cross
2 - Steamrunner class - USS Maginot, USS Numerical (Damaged)
1 - Intrepid - USS Kursk
54 - Falcon class fighters
Third strike group: Destroy unmanned defences.
1 - Lakota class refit Excelsior - USS Shoshone - Crew: Tsu (About to plow into a turrent? Either way going to go boom soon) (Damaged)
1 - Nebula Class - USS Adams
2 - Saber Class - USS Katana (Crippled) - Crew: M,M&I, USS Oak (Destroyed- Unknown)
1 - Intrepid: Freeman USS Abbot
4- New Orleans Class USS Brawly, USS Sherry (Destroyed by a cool death crashing into the turrent, all hands lost), USS Adieu, USS Dirge (Destroyed- Warp Core breach)
Member status;
Monroe: Just breached enemy fort with his team
M'real: In shadow fox above planetoid.
Mikey, Darel, Hewer: Battle Bridge of Daystrom in reformed strike group.
Teaos, Fletcher: KOed in sickbay.
Rochey: In Dakota above the planet.
Current status:
Of Strike group one which landed on the planet and is now holding position only the Dakota and Ravencrest survive the latter damaged.
Strike group two is at around 70% fighting capacity but with most ships damaged and is currently engaged with the enemy fleet which is signifigantly stronger than expected. May need the help of the third strike group after they finish with the platforms.
Strike group three is in moderate condition and seem to have eliminated a good number of the platforms and have worked a strategy to knock the rest out.
Enemy fleet is aroun 70% with several capital ships and numerous smaller ships still fighting strong.
A few of the astroid lasers have been knocked out but the remainder are hammering the fleet and fighters.

I'm still not having exploding consoles, dammit.

You see, I had my consoles explode for a
reason . I figured a torpedoe hit right next to the bridge (not directly on, and not half a ship away) would overwhelm some PTCs and other various systems in the surrounding area (ie, the bridge). So instead of a hit in engineering making Ops blow up, a hit a coule of meters away makes Ops blow up

See, that actually makes sense.

I was so close to having Grr'lek say: "How do I compensate? Surely I should already be using the maximum available power. Are we meant to have a reserve of stock compensation power? Why not have it working at full all the time?"

Too bad it would have detracted from the story - it would have been one iof the funniest things I've read in a long time.

My assumption on compensation was not "we're not using all our power so we can compensate later" it was "take power from some non vital system that we don't need right know or can use with less power and send it to the system that needs more power."
Make sense, yes?

That's my take on it as well.

Why do they only do it with 'compensate' then - why not do that with every system all the time. When in warp the impulse engines aren't needed, when in battle the holodecks aren't needed. A system whereby all possible power is available to any system that may be required during a situation is easily better than drawing it when it's needed. And why would something that can be fixed so trivially - such as by pressing the 'compensate' button - even be reported to the CO?

The impulse engines at least would need some startup time from a 'cold' state. Better to have them ready for when you inevitably drop out of warp.

Because they're all morons.
There, problem solved.

You've completely missed the point.

I don't think I missed the point at all. I'm saying that some systems
always need power. Plus, how do we know that such an instantaneous transfer of power from one system to another is feasible?
