Seriously... if they can't even come up with original names then why bother. Are we to assume that their development has been so close to that of the Romans that they use the same names despite the fact that the species their developed from has never shown these tendencies?
And about this Temporal Stuff, so far from what I can gather Ceaser hetre goes back in time to do what ever nefarious thing he does so Spock hops into a Timepod which they just happen to have on hand in the 24th Century and goes back to stop him. Never minding the Temporal PD, why not just let Daniels and his crew handle it, couldn't they just pop back, kick his ass and no one would ever know it happened?
This movie makes no sense from one end to the other, Nemesis will likely have a smarter villain and more realistic Uber-Cruisers than this thing will.
And that doesn't even cover my complaints about the needless refitting of the Big E. And that Bridge, Jesus, its more advanced than a Sovereign, the only thing that looks even slightly retro is the mic which looks to advanced for the era. I understand some things need to be changed but this is shit. Well I'll drink to the end of the franchise because if Enterprise didn't bury it this thing will.

Hadn't noticed that, Kuvagh. Good point.

I suppose since he came from the 24th century that it is possible that his parents were fascinated by Earth's Roman Empire that they named their son after an Emperor but that's just a wee bit contrived if you ask me.
I'd rather watch Spock's Brain run continuously while while eyes were held open than pay a single cent for this uninspired film.

Captain Picard's Hair wrote:Legionaries, make ready Gladia and hold fast to Scuta! Load Ballista! Prepare to engage the barbarian armies of Kirkus!
Well that would hearken back to the BoT Romulans, who had a guy named Decius. I guess you could speculate that some Romulans happen to have names that sound sort of reminiscent of Roman names, so the humans use the Roman names for convenience. (I think that's the conventional explanation of why the Romulan homeworld - speculatively ch'Rihan - is known as Romulus.)

True but that was back when Roddenbury wanted to make that connection for people, it no longer needs to be made and naming the main villan after such a well known Emperor is just uninspired.

Meh, I'll reserve judgement untill I've seen the film - it's true that time travel has a poor track record when it comes to producing decent plots, but I'm willing to hold off on assumptions. Overall the pictures, other than the bridge, look fairly promising, and with Abrams in in charge I wouldn't trust any "leaks" as far as I could throw them.

Er, to clarify, my previous post was reffering to Kuvagh pointing out the deflector dish is of the wrong type.
For some reasons I seem to have missed a page or so of comments.

That, I would say, is ignoring canon just as much as that bridge is - the Romulans have always been depicted as aping Roman names for some reason. Why change that now?

One cool idea might be to have unique Latinized versions of alien names - like how Kong Fu-zi became Confucius. (Or am I just being too much of a linguaphile?)

That doesn't make sense, and goes against canon. The Grissom only had three numbers, which indicates that they don't use zero as a first number.

Yeah, that makes no sense at all.

It is a RELAUNCH people! GET-THAT-THROUGH-YOUR HEADS! Yes, we can expect some of the old canon, but it's also a newer version thereof. If they plan on ignoring Enterprise thats fine by me. It'll be that much better. It's the Canon Nazi's who are going to ruin the movie and the only advice i have for them is: Get over yourselves.
This movie is new so it's going to feature a different take. This one we have to judge on it's own merits, not what the font for the starship names is or how many windows are on the primary hull. The only questions that should matter are: Does it tell a good story? Does it tell a good Star Trek story, you know exploring humanity through space travel? and Does it do a good job of re-introducing the original premis of Star Trek to a generation that may be unfamiliar with it?
Those questions can only be answered after the film is viewed. These pictures are an incomplete pre-view. Please keep that in mind.

Is that a deflector dish, though? I thought it was the nacelle.

I'm all for reboots, providing :-
a) Changes are made for a reason and not just for the sake of it and
b) The changes are an improvement.
If somethings changed for the worse, I'm gonna bitch about it.

The one underneath has a red tip, the same as the normal nacelle while the one on top is Blue with white, a more traditional TMP & Later era Deflector scheme.

I can deal with some changes, but trying to change the way everything looked, not going to happen.

I don't care if they ignore Enterprise, I care that they ignore the other 40 odd years of Trek that has been produced. I can deal with minor differences as well but from what we have seen, these are anything but. They have completely changed so much of it that it is as much Star Trek as Enterprise was and if everyone remembers they did the decent thing when they first launched that series and left Star Trek out of the Title since the only thing it had to do with any other Trek was the odd term that they tossed around, even though the term wasn't supposed to have been created for a couple hundred years.
