Well, we KNOW that somewhere between season 4 of TNG and Season 6 they assimilated someone with that transwarp corridor tech. So, it's not a long shot to believe that they enhanced their assimilation abilities.

Remember, they wanted to "convince" Picard to "voluntarily" join the collective. It may have been more a psychological process than anything.

the nanites didn't do all the work, IIRC. I remember a shot of the partially-assimilated crewmembers being herded down for additional components to be installed.

Yeah. Makes the new drones docile and begins the initial stuff, but surgery's needed for the full assimilation.

Nope they had assimilated the Hansens and a few E-D crew in the first encounter.
