Silly gooses! Everyone knows that Voyager came equipped with 400 torpedoes, 50 shuttles, and a state of the art quantum positron bioneural repair kit that kept the ship in pristine condition.

and don't forget the random supernatural forces running amok on the ship.

The ones that seperate people from their bodies, gave the hologram's sentiance, and protected the crew from all harm

I never really thought about it, but good point: why is the ship always so pristine and unharmed? That's one ginormous plot hole...

Or IS it?

All of you are forgetting one thing:

REPLICATORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I suspect that they could replicate replacement hull segments (maybe piece by piece obviously if the replicator isn't large enough, and then weld them together).

And of course the replicator needs fuel. It uses hydrogen/deuterium right? So if they're getting low, they could just fly by a nebula and suck in some hydrogen using the bussard collectors and replenish their deuterium tanks (after converting hydrogen to dueterium, if that's possible).

except replicators have a limited supply, and there's a limit on the kinds of stuff that can be replicated, individual hull plates is understantable, Bio-neural gel packs is not.

yes you can convert hydrogen to dueterium, by adding another neutron, it's a lot harder to find hydrogen/deuterium than you think. There aren't hundreds of nebulae every light year, and ambient hydrogen is not very concentrated at all.

Now your faced with limited supplies, do you replicate Photon Torpedoes or food for the crew?

some of the stuff can be explained by replicators but not nearly all of it.

I almost hate to bring out the old saw, but:

Because of... you know, quantum.

Didn't they try and explain it by saying polishing bulkheads have the crew a sense of pride or some such?

I'd have a greater sense of pride serving on a ship that didn't have me wasting time with makework bulls**t.

I'd love to know who got the shit job of polishing the fucking exterior of the hull at warp speed.

I would have loved to see the equivilant of the US Navy's undesignated seamen (guys with no trade) going around polishing bulkheads, making coffee, running dispatches and scraping rust.

Think the closest we've seen is the guy with a ghostbuster pack that Kirk and Spock pass in TWOK. Kirk didn't seem to have any more idea what he was doing then I do.

Given the number of "noncorporeal lifeforms" the Enterprise(s) tends to run into, it's about bloody time.
