The problem with our old focus is that she is a old age gas guzzler (comparatively). We can barely get 25 mpg out of that thing. And the Chevrolet, the oh-so-efficient as it was meant to be, barely manages more than that.

When dad leaves the naval area of social work, he'll be going agency. Thats long distance driving, so we need an efficient car. Mum does 12 miles a day (6 morning, 6 afternoon) so a diesel isn't much use, not enough time to warm up. Small petrol city car for her (currently, the new Ford Ka is looking good). We also need a car that can fit 3 of us in relative comfort on a 150 mile journey, as well as luggage, for long weekend trips to my Nan, so we need a small hatchback at least. At the moment we are looking at 1.4 diesel Fiesta (new model)

About what my Saturn wagon gets. Over here, that's still considered pretty good, but I know petrol is quite a bit more over there.

A good petrol here should get at least 40 mpg, diesel at least 50.

Over here, we like to 'cruise' sometimes, with five or six people in one car. With one of you Briton's cars, two people would have to ride on the roof.

In the end, what's more efficient: One car with 26 mpg carrying six people, or two 40 mpg cars carrying three each?

Not to mention the cargo capacity. I'm going to be moving a lot of stuff via truck, but I'll easily have two or three car (station wagon) loads of stuff to move that can't be transferred in a truck.

Really, for city driving, I hope they start introducing smaller hybrid-type cars over here in large numbers. I know some people who never do long-distance driving, or haul any significant cargo. But trucks, SUV's and wagons will never go away over here because they're needed. I'd like to see what a hybrid-electric version of my car would get; 50, 60 mpg?

What we are looking at is a Ford Fiesta for a family (my parents are diddy, they can fit). it's 5 door, can fit 5 people, has enough room for a small/medium dog in the back with that. Her engine is a 1.4 diesel with 67mpg. Her CO2 emissions are 110, meaning she is a £35 tax car. Insurance isn't an issue in this case, my parents both have good no claims and have been drivers for ages.



Then the new Ford Ka with a 1.2 petrol engine. Small, 3 door and efficient enough for a short range runabout. It could handle motorway driving alright (small 3 cylinder engines would be...inadvisable for 70 mph). It has 57mpg with low carbon emissions.



And it depends on how old or what size mpg your Saturn is. Some normal diesels here get 60 odd. There was one Renault diesel that topped out at 72 mpg

I just got through reading the "Magic telepathic headbands" debate... Thats just awesome.

I was away on business when that happened (Looking back that was a busy week around here) so didnt get involved and never bothered to read it.

Personally I think the Chakat universe has the best method of handling the telepath issues, since one of the species, the Chakat-kin have a large number of telepaths. To curb their telepathic abilities they wear headbands with special materials woven into them that 'turn off' their telepathy. The material can even be woven into building walls. The real kicker is that the headbands don't actually do crap.

As for me; my copy of the Uplifting Primer shipped this morning, I found Mass Effect for 19.97$ and my Xbox should be here sometime after the 20th. It's also -28.

I can't believe you missed that!

Anyway, Tsu - if GM holds together, you might see the Chevy Volt in 2010 or 2011 - but current hybrid tech (whether it be GM, Ford, Toyota, Honda, or whatever) really doesn't offer the fuel economy people believe. 3-6 mpg savings is industry average.

I'm back in school, unfortuneately, but so far things are looking a lot better for the semester.

just giving Tsu an estate/station wagon comparison for a non-hybrid car common over here.

Now, Don't just discount it because it's French, every single french car from peugeot or Renault that i have come across has been dearly loved by its own. Citroen on the other hand, spent too much time in the repair shop for the owner to gauge what it was like, tbh.

Now this thing is quite big, it would be an intermediate to large estate over here which is why it's as expensive as it is £15,000 for this model.

But it's diesel, i can't remember what size engine it is, but i think its a 1.6, manages 64.2 mpg. Even the petrol equivalent manages 40.1 mpg. Better than your Saturn, eh? and roughly similar kind of size.

That is a nice looking car. And Reliant is quite correct, there isn't anything wrong with French cars. There all over Africa, which should tell you something about reliability and maintenance.
