How is it bad etiquette to walk down stairs?

I dunno, it's just something that is never done on escalators that I've seen.

It's not, but we're not talking about stairs. I agree that it's good manners to stand on the same side of the escalator as everyone else, but as Ian and Reliant say, it's rude to push past people because you're so impatient that you can't wait to get to the bottom at the same time as everyone else. It's considered in the same light as queue-jumping.

IDK... in my experience, people from Jersey move faster than folks from almost anywhere else, save the Big Apple. However, it's the norm here to get on an escalator and let it carry you. Sure, some people will walk along with the motion of the escalator, but the polite thing to do is just stop and suck up the extra 2.8 seconds if people are in front of you.

That's pretty much the view over here as well. Indeed, in most parts of Europe I've been to, escalators are for standing still on. Though it's good manners to keep to one side, in case someone in a hurry needs to overtake you.

And it depends on where you are if the stairs are close to the escalators or if there even are any stairs period. After all a broken down escalator is just a set of stairs. The mall where I was staying for a business trip was like this, tons of escalators, one or two sets of actual stairs.

And its not about getting their quick so much as it's just about being a lazy and inconsiderate s**t. I mean honestly, is it such a pain in the ass to walk DOWN stairs that the second a machine will do it for you you just stop? And even if you are that lazy is there some reason you can't get to one side so those of us who aren't can get by?
If I'm not in a hurry why bother spending the energy, I don't see the point. It's not lazy, it just common sense. In the UK there's an unwritten law that you stand on the right and pass on the left for escalators. This is especially true on the tube where there's actually a rule about it. They even announce it on the tannoy at busy times.

Of course, you're completely exempt if you're a tourist and English is not your first language. In this scenario, you're also allowed to travel with suitcases, pushchairs and backpacks in the middle of fucking rush hour too :)

Me, I can't walk up or down escalators. I have a balance issue, and if I try walking on a moving object (unless sufficiently large like the Earth... maybe a cruise liner) I fall. Be it train, escalator, or small boat, I have serious trouble maintaining balance on moving objects, whether they are constant or not. Hence why I prefer the stairs.

I preferred to call them "Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber." For ten minutes they were grilling a cabbie about the route he would take, haggling over fares (even though fares are set by the Taxi and Limousine Commission,) and asking general information as if he were a tour guide. When he finally got sick of them, I got in the cab and found out from the driver that even though they had all those questions, they had no idea about what route would be best, what they wanted to see, etc.
