Re: What's the latest in people's lives?

Well, got my grades... :|
Got a B in Engineering Physics II. :)
Got an A in Aviation History.
Got an F in Calc III :x :( (this was the third time taking it... but I have a D from before so at least I've "passed" the class).
And got an A in Orchestra (never understood how that worked).

And if anyone doesn't know, Engineering Physics means physics with Calculus, and the II indication that it was on electricity and magnetism. And Calc III covered multidimensional calculus, expanding on previous knowledge.

My GPA is now at 2.76 ( :( ); yeah, I have trouble with homework.
Lets put it this way, without the homework my GPA would be 3.8-4.0.

Now for the good news...
I am finished with school 'till Jan 20, so I have plenty of time to be on here... and write music... and play Bridge Commander... and get some sleep at night too.

sorry to hear it Riker...

What happenned with your Calc grade Stitch, you just not a math person or what?

I'm still waiting on most of my final grades, especially since I have to take two f'ing finals after I get back from break.

Did I mention I hate first semester snowdays? :madashell:

Oh I am definitively a math person.

I had trouble completing the homework (which was 40 % of the grade) and wasn't feeling well during the final.
My test grades were good though, and I had no trouble understanding it. Just getting it done. This is where my ADHD becomes a problem, when the math takes an hour to do.
I also didn't have a good foundation in calculus. I never took precalc (so my trig is in the toilet, so to speak) and in Calc I, I couldn't understand what my professor was saying (English wasn't very good, or clear). Still got a B in the class (because there was no homework), but it hasn't helped in the long run.
I've been trying to make up for it, but it doesn't seem to be working. And next semester I will be taking Differential Equations, which is basically Calc IV (and if anyone has any incites into such a course, please tell me).

sorry, the only thing I know about it is that my pre-calc teacher thinks it'd be fun to go back and take that class again just for fun. :?

obviously I'm taking pre-calc now, and the only thing about this class that I didn't get in algebra last year are trig identities which aren't that hard. maybe there's more to it second semester.

funny story about the teacher that doens't speak engish...when my dad was in college his bio-chem teacher was a Korean substitue becasue the real teacher got really sick and the guy spoke in two word sentences and graded really really hard so most people had like D's in the class. One of my dad's favorite stories to tell about when he was in college (other than those of what he and his friends did to people that were stupid enough to get drunk and pass out when with him) was when a bunch of people went to the dean to get him to through in some extra points for the class since they didn't have the real teacher. The sub came into class the next day and you could tell he was pissed.
He proceeded to lecutre the class saying (read with Korean accent)

I no give any free pionts....you want good grade, I have answer!...YOOUU STUDY HADDER!

he lecutured the whole class using variations of the three above phrases, my dad was laughing his ass off and the rest of the class tried to get him to shut up b/c they were afraid he'd piss of the teacher even more.

ABout those trig Identities, I never learned any of them, until I found out that it was required for calc (if would be nice if they thought of it before they said I didn't need precalc  ).

Probably a stupid question, but what's a GPA? I've never heard of them.

Its your overall grade, with 4.0 as the highest and 0.0 as the lowest.
I'm not sure what it actually stands for though. All I really know is A=4.0 and F=0.0

Grade Point Average. You take a weighted average (weighted by credits) of your course grades where A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0, and +/- grades go somewhere between the appropriate grades, though I think exact fractional values may differ by school. So for my school IIRC an A- is 3.75 and a B+ is 3.25 and a B- is 2.75 and so on...

Add up these equivalents multiplied by the credit value for each respective course over every course in your transcript and divide that by total credits and that's your overall GPA

see my school divides it up into thirds so an A- is a 3.66 and a B+ is a 3.33.

Rochey, I though you were a teacher how do you not know what a GPA is! [/sarcasm]

well their not that hard, it probably sucked learning them on the fly like that, but I'm sure you got used to it.

The worst part was asking what a trig identity was.

Out of curiosity, what do you do across the pond?

In Ireland we use a points system.
When you do a course in school, you choose one of three levels: higher, ordinary or foundation.

The points are awarded based on what level you do, and how well you get.

Grade: Points (higher) Points (ordinary)
A1 (90-100%): 100 60
A2 (85-89%): 90 50
B1 (80-84%): 85 45
B2 (75-79) : 80 40
B3 (70-74) : 75 35
C1 (65-69) : 70 30
C2 (60-64) : 65 25
C3 (55-59) : 60 20
D1 (50-54) : 55 15
D2 (45-49) : 50 10
D3 (40-44) : 45 5
N/G (0-39): You've failed; you get nothing.

During your last year of secondary (high) school, you do a test known as the Leaving Certificate, which tests you on a whole bunch of subjects. Four subjects are mandatory (English, Maths, Irish, and one other European language) and there's a whole bunch of others you can choose to take as well (history, physics, technical drawing, wood/metalwork, applied maths, etc). Your score is tallied up and you're awarded a points total (eg, 520 points) of all your subjects. You then use these points to determine what college courses you can take (for example, an architecture course could require 590 points, and thus you won't get in, but a history course may only require 480 points, so you could take that). So over here money won't get you into a college if you're a dumbass. In addition, some courses require a certain score in certain subjects, regardless of your overall score (eg, a course in theoretical physics might require a B3 in physics and a C3 in maths).
