Rumours, news and general speculation
Re: Rumours, news and general speculation
And now we're using Search for Spock style phasers and have another Akira knockoff.

Well that looks aggressively disappointing.

Man, it's like that blonde at the bar after a hard night - pretty to look at, but nothing going on in the wheelhouse.

Don't you hear my call, though you're many years away, don't you hear me calling you?

Is this supposed to be in the "prime" universe or in the Abrahms-Universe?
From the looks I would say the latter, lens-flares and all......

But it very much looks like the Abrams universe.
If rumours are true, the producers thought they could say it was Prime, and get the TOS fans onboard, but use an Abrams aesthetic and thus also get the JJ fans on board. To me that seems about right for the quality of thinking that has obviously gone into this show. We'll know if it worked in a few months, I guess.

Well, there's the rub. So long as the powers that be feel that the predominant value of the show is cosmetics rather than content, there will be suckage.

I sincerely wish people who were developing established properties would hire just one actual fan, whose only job was to say, "No. That's stupid and here's why."

The impression I've gathered is that the people who work in the entertainment industry are, as you'd expect, creative people. And understandable, they want to do work that displays their creativity.DonP wrote:I sincerely wish people who were developing established properties would hire just one actual fan, whose only job was to say, "No. That's stupid and here's why."
This can be an issue if they're doing a show that is set in somebody else's universe. It seems like the average production crew are reluctant to just go "Well we will use that ship design from that other movie, which will look in this way that other people designed, with plots dictated by stories other people have done..."
So what you get is "their take" on the material. I can see why they want to do it, but at heart I'm just a Star Trek fan who really wants to see more Trek. And honestly I cry inside a little to see my beloved show bastardised like this.

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation
There's no doubt that the same phenomenon works from the flip side, too - we all know the stories of how Roddenberry shat all over other people's work and contributions in order to maintain his death grip on his world. However, it was after all his creation, and he was entitled to do so (no matter that there were less assholic ways to go about it.)
The fact of the matter is that if someone comes along about, say, 50 years after the universe debuted and wanted to contradict parts of it to showcase their own creative stamp... then just MAKE YOUR OWN DAMNED SHOW AND DON'T CALL IT STAR TREK.

Or even just set it a hundred years after TNG, and then you can make it look at advanced as you like and most fans would love it.Mikey wrote:The fact of the matter is that if someone comes along about, say, 50 years after the universe debuted and wanted to contradict parts of it to showcase their own creative stamp... then just MAKE YOUR OWN DAMNED SHOW AND DON'T CALL IT STAR TREK.

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation
I have to admit the trailer looks nice and interesting...but at the same time I thought...what if this is a completely new sci-fi universe? Is there any indication as to why it HAS to be star trek? What if the klingons are just aliens called differently? They LOOK completely differently. They have a complete different vibe...(neither space soviets, nor space samurai...)...so....
I guess my point is...if they have great quality, good creativity and sublime writting.....they don't necessarily need the star trek name....now that I know this is supposed in the prime universe...meh....looks like another "Enterprise" to me now....

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation
Well, it's called "Star Trek : Discovery", for one.
I gotta say, if it was just called "Discovery" and those so-called-Klingons were being called Bugomites and so on... I'd like it a lot more than I do.
