The fact that it's the most advanced starship in the fleet? And undergoes a further upgrade. And it's the flagship. And it's the fastest. It's pretty obviously the best science ship/explorer.
No it doesn't. The only visible upgrades are to the weapons array. The Sovereigns should be combat based so it can free up the Galaxy and other science-based ships for science missions. The Sovereigns outgun the Galaxys 3 to 1, so smaller battle groups would be used and frees up lighter armed vessels.

i dont think the sovereign would make a good battle ship either though... too much space dedicated to science facilities, living quarters, and civilian areas... they need a sovereign/ galaxy or even prometheus class sized ship dedicated 100% to combat efectiveness.

We have no proof that it has anything for science mission, and it's the strongest ship in the fleet.

The fact that we only have two of them is sad. The whole fleet needs a refit. Galaxy class starships should be science ships. Sov's should be nothing but war! 2 forward and 2 aft rapid fire QTLs. 14 type XII phasers. 20cm of ablative armor. Multi-layered regenerative shields. Starfleet has it so why not use it.

Only two that we know of. Before we saw the dominion war we thought starfleet may only have a few hundred ships now we know it is more like thousands.

I don't think it wastes that much space. Well compared to a normal starship. As far as Federation design go it is pretty good.

Indeed, its one of the few ships I actually like.
I hope they put them into full scale produciton after the war.

I don't really know how I feel about it. It is rather ugly and seems to be to good over all. If it was powerful I would want it to be slower but it keeps up with the Enterprise. It is also very agile for a ship its size. It just seems a bit to much. And again it is very ugly.

I have to disagree with you on the ugly angle, I quite like it.

Ah, normal service has been resumed. I was starting to worry about you two.

As for the ship, I'd take a Defiant, and QRF as the mission.

I know, I don't think any of us expected that to happen. :P
