A criminal record (if he even has one) wouldn't immediately disqualify you from service in a RL military unless it's a serious offence (like murder), I see no reason why it would be different in ST. Hell some of Canada's best NCO's joined under a "go in the Army or go to jail" deal in the 70's and I served with a couple guys who joined with assault charges.

Its not that I have a huge issue with them. I was fine with it, to an extent, and it didn't take away my enjoyment of a movie. But it would be unfair, critically, to point them out. I will say, however, that most "blockbusters" take liberties with them far more than your average movie. There's nothing "wrong" or "right" about this, a simple fact of the whole action/superhero/adventure/sci fi film. I would simply be remiss for not pointing it out. I'm sure we could find 1000 contrivances in the series without much trouble =)

Very true, and yes, pretty much all "blockbusters" have almost too many plot conveniences.

Just got back from seeing it. I skimmed Grahams review last night, so I was aware of the whole Delta Vega issue, and I knew going into it that the film would rely heavily on coincidence and I had already forgiven them that. I remember thinking during my AP Exam "at least I'm going to see Star Trek later" and had an epiphany, I realized I don't really care how they screw up distances or travel times so long as they get the characters right, because that's what (IMO) Star Trek is about; the relations of people in the circumstances. I can accept the changes because I've decided to acknowledge this as "new" canon. The old universe is just as valid what with the parallel universe theory and such, now we just have a new one to explore.

My second epiphany, much less profound, came somewhere around the 2nd of 3 essays, "You know what... even if the new Star Trek is just another mindless Hollywood shoot 'em up... I don't think I'll mind too much. I could really go for one of those right now."

Needless to say, I came away very impressed with the movie. Infact, I think it's #3 after TWOK and FC.

I'm gonna go with the same thing... #3 out of 11 is pretty good though IMO. And yes, the character development was the important part. The travel times were slightly annoying, but besides that I had no issue with it.

I just got back from seeing it, too. For the most part, it was great. I am willing to accept that Nero has caused the timeline that we have come to know to skewer permanently into this alternate reality. Sad, though, that there may now never be another movie or series in the old timeline that we've come to know and (perhaps, somewhat) love. Star Trek as we know it no longer exists (poor Spock; the past that he knew no longer exists).

When Quinto's Spock takes the Nimoy's Spock's ship, I was thinking he was going to return to the future and prevent the destruction of Romulus and restore the timeline. I guess we should be grateful that they didn't go the usual "reset-button" route

I didn't like the Enterprise's interiors. Especially the bridge. Too much light. Too much glare

The tattooed, bald Romulans looked silly.

I didn't mind the compassion that Uhura shows to Spock after Vulcan is destroyed, but that they turned it into a romance!

But, the Centaurian Slug (the bug Nero put in Pike)! Anyone recognize it? It's the parasite from TNG's "Conspiracy"! Although, we hear nothing more about it later on. Or, maybe that's how the creatures were able to infiltrate the Federation!

And, any moment with Nimoy's Spock was super. When he says to Kirk, "I have been, and always shall be, your friend", I had a tear in my eye.

Okay here's something potentially freaky. Some Datapoints :

The new Enterprise has very different nacelles to the old one.

The travel times seemed much shorter.

The warp effect was much different, with the ship apparently in some sort of tunnel effect.

An alternate timeline shouldn't change how standard warp drive works. So combining the above... was this really standard warp drive?

The capper : I THINK that when talking about how to beam back aboard the Enterprise, Spock called it "trans warp beaming."

Put that all together... has Starfleet in the alternate universe cracked the transwarp issue far earlier than they otherwise would have?

Is old Spock now trapped in the new universe?

Yes he is.

I've got my tickets to see it tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it, though I have a feeling the dubious science issues (supernova wrecking a galaxy? Come on!) might make me groan. Still, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Holy Crap, your right... It was trans warp beaming, that may be why it took such a short time, that would be pretty cool, if they did it would make more sense. The travel times at least, and I love the new effect too, it works well, and the new sound is really cool.

I just took this to mean that a stationary object was transporting to a warping ship.

Oh, and I don't get the big deal about travel times; the Enterprise E went from the Neutral Zone to Earth's doorstep in the span of a scene cut, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Even if it is because this new/old ship is supposed to have inferior technology, we don't want to be sitting around watching space fly by do we?

If I remember correctly, from an epp., it uses the subspace field to allow the beam to travel at warp speeds without deteriating, so therefore being able to travel a longer distance than normal.
