I would love if we saw Freedom and Challengers during TNG in place of the Excelsiors and Mirandas and all the damn million different kitbashes. Starfleet with Galaxy and Nebulas for the big ships, Freedom and Challengers for the smaller ships... god that would make so much more sense than the wacky "eighty year old Frankensteins" that we kept getting.

It'd make sense. I certainly would have liked to see more of the Challengers. Maybe even the Centaur class.

WRT the deflector dishes (or lack thereof), I've always figured that it's possible to have the dish (or generator in this case) mounted internaly, giving it extra protection, but decreasing the efficiency of the system itself. It would explain why a more militarised design like the Miranda had no dish.
