I recommned if you want to talk about phasers you should go start a topic on SIF's or something, we'll get to the topic you want eventually.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

my guess, something starting with a descrepency in trek cannon, then debilitating into a debate over historical context that gave the writers the idea, the into an agument, then the thread will be left alone for a while, then we'll start talking about the next trek descrepency.

Or we may start talking about kittens, butterflies, geneticly enhanced super whales, girls, politics, GCS bashing, Captain Picard's shoe size, or even if and when the world will explode. With us, you just never can tell 8)

idk, i've noticed a pattern, usually it will start about, Starfleet policy toward kittens, butterflies, geneticly enhance superwhales, girls, politics (with the exception of the politics thread), general discussion of the GCS, cptn Picard, and the different near death scenario's presented in Trek for earth.
