I own the movie, but still never watched it. Am I missing out?

Movie was great; I still need to read the books.

Never saw the film; I've read all 5 books of the trilogy (yes, that's right) and the BBC radio scripts multiple times.

The film was excellent, and that's from a perspective of having read the books first. The plot bore only the most superficial resemblance to the book, but it kept to the spirit, which gives me the impression that Adams was planning to follow it up with films of the rest of the trilogy.

I'd advise you to both read the books and watch the film. In that order. The film is good, but you miss out on a lot of great stuff if you don't read the books.

Even though we never saw it I would like to think they Traded for the bits. There must have been quite a few friendly species out there to trade with.

That just happened to have Federation-standard equipment that could interface perfectly with a ship when the crew can't get one part of the ship (holodeck power source) working with the rest? Pretty big if.

We've run into the compatibility issue before, when the Doctor was run on a completely alien hospital system, for example. There've been enough cases of cross-compatibility in either direction in the Voyager series that we must conclude that 1) The writers are idiots (saved you the work, Rochey
) and 2) either there's some galactic standard, or...quantum

And yet for us, we have trouble crossing a Mac and a PC. My my, will we come a long way in the future

Maybe it's like submarine docking collars. The two american rescue subs were fitted with a 'generic' docking collar that is close enough in size to subs of multiple nations to fit them all.

I admit that is possible, but unlikely. The reason being that we are all human, and tend to think along similar lines. So, say US and Soviet tech COULD be interchangeable and compatable to a certain extent. Alien races wouldn't nessessarily even think in the same way we would, proscess information the same way we would, and so on. So it stands to reason they would see things quite differently. Which is why, to borrow your example, I would have to chuckle every time the NX Enterprise would have a docking bay compatable with every ship they meet.

I have to go with ... quantum.
It sure seems to be needed to explain a lot in VOY, doesn't it?
