I'm not sure all Romulan tech is inferior, but during the TNG and DS9 eras they seemed to be roughly on a par in most fields. The only really notable area where the Romulans were inferior to the Federation is in military technology. The D'Deridex is about 1.5KM long and designed for combat. The Galaxy class is 700 M long and designed for virtualy every damn thing the designers could think of. The fact that the Galaxy class can beat a D'Deridex indicates that their military tech at least is inferior.
Pardon me? They almost got their asses destroyed in Tin Man from two rounds of disrupter fire from a Warbird, they had to stop to make repairs.

If something has to be twice as large to do the same job it is safe to assume it isnt built to the same standard.

While it could be the case they just like building big why would they build big but stop their weapons systems bellow the standard of the time.

I cant remember the episode but I remember the Romulans being scared to take on the E-D one on one and wouldnt take in on when there were two warbirds vs the E-D and a BoP.

They did? *shrug* Perhaps I'm thinking of something else, then. In that case, it's likely that Romulan tech is superior to Federation tech in most areas.

Tin Man, E-D almost destroyed in two hits. They also sealed the E-D in an asteroid in the phase cloak episode, an asteroid that Riker stated would require the entire torpedo loadout to destroy.

Two Warbirds VS the E-D and three Cruiser sized BoP's. Yeah, that's a fair match. You understand that combat isn't some bizarre macho chest beating match right? It's preferable to engage when you have an overwhelming advantage. Besides that entire episode was about exposing a traitor, not blasting the E-D into tiny bits.

Edit:

Now, tell me those are the usual BoP scouts. There have been several different models. Thanks for the image Graham.

During the dom wars the rommies didn't manage very well either. At the last battle their lines were the first to collapse and at the end of the war they were in as bab a shape as the klingons

How much of that is numbers, leadership, ability and actual tech? During various DS9 battles we see Federation ships go down like a mob hit with a shotgun as well.

That's probably due to the lack of diversity in their fleets, and the fact they had less ships.

Exactly, didn't the Romulan force number only several hundred ships (400 or so) compared to the thousands of Federation and Klingon vessels?

Those numbers are pure speculation.

The D'Deridex doesn't seem much more or less powerful than the GCS, its probably around the same. Which considering it is twice the size is pathetic.

We don't know the exact numbers of ships. Only that dom forces numbered around 30000 ships so the rommies must have had a few thousand ships themselves (even if the majority were scouts)

The thing is mostly empty space. Do try and think about what you are saying.
