It's true that the ships are not that powerful in comparison with an Akira or a Defiant but I believe (especially for the Saber and the Steam) that are a lot stronger than a ship of the same class or size.

I think it would take a Defiant rather easily.

What, a Sabre? Any reason to think this?

Never mind... was thinking something else.

When comparing size and firepower The Defiant is not the rule is the exception. I am comparing the Saber and the Steam with a Hideki class a small Klingon Bird of prey, a dom bug ship or a miranda

Agreed. As far as the New Orleans; she ain't pretty, but she's a perfect design for a ship which is contemporary with or slightly predates the GCS.

Well ugly usually does follow ugly.

I do rather like the engineering hull integrated into the saucer more closely as in the New Orleans rather than having a neck, though. It's a more streamlined look, and functionally makes a ship more compact with less "extraneous" space.

Hello, I joined up few days ago and this is my first post.

The Saber seems to me like a combat support ship designed to provide fire support for larger ships, and to cover their escape when things go bad.

As for the Steamrunner, I like the design, especially the placement of the deflector. The explosion of the deflector in FC seemed to be preety large, so placing it in a external pod would decrease the damage to the ship in case of an explosion.

Indeed, welcome.

Good point on the Steamrunner's deflector. Although, by having it in such a position, it's exposed to more enemy fire.

Welcome, and good points. I could see the Saber's compact design being useful as a picket-type.

Saber and Steamrunner are both cute little ships but crap next to the defiant. They would make for fair scout ships "maybe" but as to picket ships NO. A good picket ship would be the Akira. Long range, lots of weapons coverage, heavy loadout on PTLs and fast. The Saber and Steamrunner class may have been a good idea but they don't really fill in any needs that aren't met by other classes.

Who compared them to the Defiant? I can't imagine any reason at all to do so. The Akira is far too large and presumably expensive to be anything other than the 24th century equivalent of a ship-of-the-line, and probably a first-rate one at that (technically first-rate, not just a compliment.) You don't need an outrider to have the bulk of your long-range bombardment ability.

The Akira's firepower is on the order of the Galaxy/Nebula, in a smaller package. Even in the age of the Sov, that's not inconsiderable, given the low numbers of such beasts as a Sovereign-class as yet. She's a front-line battleship. There could be smaller patrol or policing roles for which a Steamrunner-type would be suitable. There does have to be some policing to be done, after all; we've even seen some shadier parts of the Trek universe in spite of Picard's bluster...
