Well, a mild enough nitric acid won't burn too bad, but will stain the subject's skin an interesting shade of yellow for weeks.

I dyed my arm purple once in chemistry. The teacher used it to teach the class how to make things cancel out. By the end of the class my arm was normal colour.

"Howling mad" Murdock was my favorite character on the A-Team when I was a kid. Then he showed up on Star Trek as Barclay - another memorable nut-job.
