Yeah, the only examples I have are 3:2 (Microsoft Surface, Samsung Chromebook Pro apparently, and I think HP's new convertible/Surface competitor). A filmographer could probably better explain why 2:1 is desired than I (since I really have no idea)

OK, just checked with House of Cards. It's filmed in 2:1 but it's actually put out in 4K, which is still 16:9. It fully fits the TV, ie there's no black bars, they just don't use the rest of the image.

Kind of what I was wondering in the first place!

The is advantage in reducing the image down in size. Scaling increases sharpness in an image. Simply cropping doesn't have this advantage. It quite common for stuff to be filmed out of aspect ratio and changed afterwards. For example films are always filmed to fit a cinema screen, some are cropped to fit a tv, others are cropped to fit an airline screen. In some ways the creator is leaving themselves with some future proofing, Like filming on 35mm cameras rather than simply TV cameras, allowed TOS and TNG to be moved to HD (albeit with a old aspect ratio).

Modern cameras film in what's called log format. For example Canon have something called C-Log, Sony in S-Log. These formats compress the colour information using a logarithmic scale. This is then corrected in post processing and gives you HDR (High Dynamic Range) footage. If you look at the footage straight out of one of these cameras they look awful. They have to be 'colour graded' to be any good.

The consumer market doesn't doesn't get any of this as expectations are that stuff will look great right out of the box.

Showrunner Aaron Harberts noted that original series showrunner Bryan Fuller was an advocate of updating the look of the Klingons and was involved in the redesign — and that the look of the Klingons has frequently changed over the franchise’s 52 years.

“In the different versions of Trek, the Klingons have never been completely consistent,” Harberts said. “We will introduce several different houses with different styles. Hopefully, fans will become more invested in the characters than worried about the redesign.”

Well, it takes time to phase out hand weapons in any service / army no matter the nation so there can be two related weapons looking similar but not identical in two different ships. It's not as problematic as the Klingons or uniform (Voyager had a reason to keep old uniform after DS9 took First Contact ones).
