Kind of weird, then. It's neither one thing nor the other - wider than standard 16:9, but still considerably narrower than the likes of 2.35:1 that you see in cinemas.

Difference for the sake of difference. The sort of cosmetic trickery used when the creator is painfully aware of the lack of content.

2:1 is what? Ultra-wide? Do monitors come in 2:1?

I've heard of a few things recently being shot in 2:1. Jurassic World and a couple of Netflix shows. From what I can gather, it's an attempt to set a new standard designed phones.

I think the 2:1 ratio supposedly works better for computer newer screens and mobile devices.

Are you surprised? If it were otherwise, it would be set for release on network instead of on the streaming service.

I am surprised. I thought people watched those through their TVs. But I can't claim to know much about streaming services.

Oh no, everything today is marketed to 14 year olds and if it isn't on their phones it didn't happen.

Alex Kurtzman: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Will Spark Debate And Adhere To Canon

http://trekmovie.com/2017/07/06/alex-ku ... -to-canon/
How Discovery connects to the original Star Trek

If you are a fan of Trek you are going to see a lot of things which hearken back to the original series and elements of the original series. I am not just talking plot, but the spirit of what that show was. We are going to be revisiting a couple of things on Star Trek: Discovery that I think people are going to find familiar. Without spoiling anything we are adhering to a timeline and sticking to the rules, but also I think finding some new areas and avenues that have only been alluded to, but never fully explored.

Then this will be a very dichotomous show...

Pretty sure nothing uses 2:1 aspect ratio. My laptop is 2560x1600 (16:10), my iMac 5120 x 2880 (16:9).

I've seen monitors with 2560×1440 (16:9), 3840×2160 (16:9) - This is one of the 4K standards.

Movies are frequently 2.35:1 or even 2.40:1.

Even traditional SLRs are 3:2, cheap/old cameras are typically 4:3.

2:1 Aspect Ratio Apparently it's also used by Netflix and Amazon for some of their productions (ie House of Cards) and I don't hear anyone bitching about the aspect ratio of them.

(And I got 2:1 mixed up with 3:2. Newer laptops/tablets seem to be going with that standard rather than usual 16:9)

Yes, but the point is no display is that shape. Happy to be proved wrong, but I can't find one. A 3:2 display would be great for photography, especially a 30m pixel one, I could show my photos full size.

That would be 6720 x 4480. Not even Apple's 5K display is that high resolution at the moment. It's only 5120 x 2880 and is also way too shallow. ;)
