Since you had mentioned a helmet, I was thinking more along the line of a gun or a rifle, not a canon.
Would you want to wear a helmet that had glass protecting the back of your head?
And we've seen many shots hit, shall I say, non-specific locations on ships.
And I'm not so sure a window would be so easy to hit.
How many times have we seen this in ST, someone saying "aim for the windows" and people getting blow out because of this?
You have to be careful on how you judge things. Remember that IU there is plot to protect them. However when we do our own debates we can't use Plot as a reason. We have to factor things as close to reality as we can. The fact that ST ships can if they wish hit such small targets means a major risk.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear.
Is it possible that the windows are simply transparent sections of the hull? As in, same material, just something was done to it that made part of it transparent.

I don't think so. Short of cloaking technology, the only way to make a material transparent is to make it into a material that's transparent - i.e., a different material.

No, if you look at the rooms and outer hull. The shape and form change to fit the windows. If they were the same material there wouldn't be any need of this.

Trek accuracy is nowhere near good enough to specifically target windows. Do I need to drag out TrekMiss again to demonstrate this?

The real danger is of a phaser or torpedo spread happening to hit them.

The E-D targetted specific points on enemy ships on a comman basis. If your enemy fires enough shots at a point. Sooner rather then later, they'll get a hit. Bypassing the armored hull and leaving only human bodies and paper thin doors for protection.

Abnd how often did they hit what they were aiming at.

Exactly my point - Fed weapons are machine guns, not sniper rifles. They can't reliably target specific points, but if they throw enough firepower the targets way they'll hit something vital (such as a window).

Or on the E-D, a nacelle.

"They can't reliably target specific points, but if they throw enough firepower the targets way they'll hit something vital (such as a window)"

This was the point I was going for. They can see a weak point means they can fire on the weak point and will eventually hit that weak point.

Fair enough - my original impression was that you were suggesting they could fire single aimed shots through the windows.

Umm, no! Have you seen them shooting before? Even when Worf is doing the shooting at a sitting target they need several shots to do anything. The thing is that he WILL still get that prize shot at some point.

Maybe the windows have some magical property that directs weapons fire away from them...

I'm kidding.

At least their shooting with ships is ok. Their hand weapons are terrible.

Not so great actually - they routinely miss great wallowing targets at very short range. There was a video around demonstrating this, but it's up and disappeared.

I know their aim isn't so great. Hence the "ok" part. It still is better than their hand weapon accuracy.

Of course, so would mine if I were throwing the bullets.
