Guys, after a lot of thought.....
This is the last battle we will fight with the hexmap. It just takes too long and I feel like we lose a ton of momentum in the sim. From now on I will take written battle orders and do it in a much simpler format so it can be done and we can do weekly turns. Unless anybody really loudly objects I think this is the way to go for the sim.

Great! I never understood the hex system anyway. I prefer writing things out rergardless.

Yeah, this is taking forever. Been fun, but slows everything down.

So, how exactly will it work now?
" Have my group of battleships attack his cruisers."
" Your ships are all destroyed."
" Damn."

Well I have been working on a new sheet with Staplic that incorporates a variety of factors. It reduces every fleet battle to a number of rounds essentially. You start at distance and exchange long range shots. The rounds progress as you close, assuming both sides want to close the range otherwise the side with the most manuverability is able to dictate to some degree, and there are rolls and potential bonuses for flanking manuvers, cloaked ship ambushes and the like. You can do the same as before and either keep ships in when hurt or send them away to repair them.
It uses the same offense vs defense ratings and manuver vs manuver ratings as before so all those advantages still play a big role. Plus one can get bonus points for innovative tactics. Also I would guess battles might get smaller, since I could run more of them. With the hex system I error on the side of pushing the most ships together in one place as I can so I don't have to run 3 at once. With this system you might see more of a Dominion War style with fleets strung out across more space.
Like I said if it really bugs people we can keep the hex system, but I get the feeling it basically chops the game up and there might well be a ton of battles coming up.

The only issue with that is I can't run all the calculations all that fast. A round takes me like 30 minutes to do. So it might still take 4 hours of constant work.
