New York wasn't named after Old York (i.e the city of York in Yorkshire, England) though
It was named after The Duke of York in the 17th century, shortly after the British took it over from the Dutch (where it was previously called New Amsterdam).
There's loads of places with the same name in the UK and US isn't there? There's a Birmingham in Alabama. There's a London in Minnesota (and probably many more places), Manchester in Boston....I'm pretty sure the list is extensive

Really? Bill Shat lives right next door to me and Avery Brooks once borrowed my garden hose to water his Begonias

How very dare you -pouts-
Insult my heritage! Well technically, i'm from Southend centre but hey. In fact, since i lived alot more in Italy, I'm more Anguilara-sabazian than i am a southender.

I'll tell you for free that Southend has changed a lot over the past 10 years, all for the worst. It's gone right down hill and probably has been since the early 90's. It's OK for a shopping trip in the afternoon on a Saturday but you're taking your life into your hands going out for a pint there nowadays.
I however, live in an exclusive development habited exclusively by ex- Star Trek actors, hence my post

When I was born, '95, as far as my parents say it wasnt that bad. We lived in a little house in salisbury avenue, then we moved to a house in Anguillara Sabazia. And every time i go back to southend (because my entire family lives there basically), I make a remark at how much worse its got over the last time.

I know where Salisbury Avenue is too!
It's a sad state of affairs really because once was the time it was a fairly decent, twee little seaside resort with good shopping amenities and great for a day out with a bucket and spade during the summer months. Then suddenly, social housing took off and the inevitable decline took place. Am I allowed to say that sort of thing nowadays???

Avery Brooks used to live in my howetown, BTW.
Went to see the broadway musical version of "Young Frankenstein" yesterday - very amusing, although maybe not quite as great an adaptation as "The Producers." Good news - there was a hint at the next Brooks musical, although there is a good chance it was just a joke. You can all guess if you want.
