Britain wasn't involved in the opening phase of the war - the US army was kicked out solely due to the efforts of part-time local volunteers.

Colonies that had the support of the rest of the great powers. The most powerful nation losing to an alliance of the second, third and fourth most powerful isn't too shabby a showing.

PS, Britain was involved in the opening parts of the war. British troops raided a number of US towns on the eastern shore.

We had the support of france but that came late in the war. England should have won the war long before that time. Spain came to war but wasn't really that interested with anything other then grabbing a little land. England misjudged the war and it cost them dearly. The same was the problem for France in the Seven Years War.

I've felt guilty before, but just because i'm guilty of something doesn't mean it has to effect me in anyway.

"conscious" means "awake" or "aware." "Conscience" means the part of the superego that directs us towards our morality.

IIRC the US alos lost Detroit and had a fair amount of Washington DC burned to the ground and thousands of slaves lost.

A failed advance doesn't mean defeat, it means you didn't achive a goal. That tends to happen in war.

I'd call failing to achieve your objectives a defeat.
