in the dom wars we saw the defiant rip bigger ships to shreds. this is a perfect example of a well designed smaller attack craft. we saw 1 of these ships kill the recency in the mirrror universe. working in a pack defiants would be unstoppable in a battle against a larger ship. what battle ships are we even talking about here in trek anyway? we never see the big bad dominion ones in battle so we have no idea what they would do. the only effective battle ship we ever see in battle is the scimitar and its overpowerd to the point of god hood and it can fire while cloaked.

all the ships we have seen in treck even the largest ones save for the ones i mentioned before and a borg cube focus most of thier secondary (heavy) weapons foward and have 360 degree primary (phaser, disruptor ect) coverage all the way around. so the battle ship would have to pick its targets and split the fire up. and again how many ships can it engauge before it reaches its power output limit. ok you may loose a ship but what happens when you go BB vs BB one comes out victorius but takes a beating i'm sure and is not nearly as combat effective i'm sure. the BB is certainly not the end all and be all in trek.

again i don't remember saying that battleships are a bad idea and there shouldn't be any and i certainly don't recall making any personal attacks at you Trry so i don't know where you get off. but a group of smaller ships like defiants could easily pummel a BB type ship into submission especially in a large fleet action when its destracted by larger targets

If you'd follow the thread and what's already been stated, we're speaking of a roughly GCS/Sovereign sized vessel built in the style of the Defiant. The Defiant's only advantage, that it was an actual warship vs. the GCS flying hotel school of shipbuilding, is gone. It would be facing vessels built just like it, for war. In that scenario the tiny little Defiant gets chewed up and spit out by the Battleship because just like I outlined above, small ships in Trek have no real advantages over larger ships.

Which conveniently ignores that many ships mount aft launcher as well. In fact the GCS had one fore and one aft. The Sovereign goes even higher than that. It also ignores that Federation photon torpedoes are not canon shells, they are guided weapons capable of maneuvering off the firing axis.

In a competently designed ship it will have enough power for all its weapons and its shields. Aside from that a battleship will have significantly higher firepower than any smaller ship. You're looking at 10 times or more the tonnage of a Defiant. It would easily be able to start picking off Defiant like ships quickly.

Well if in scenario one I start off with ten small ships, and end the battle with four left the best I can get those ships back up to is 40% strength of my previous force. Meanwhile my damaged, but still operating BB can be repaired and get back out there. You have to build six more small ships to get the small squadron back up to its previous strength.

Yeah, not really. For that to work you have to assume, 1) The BB captain is an idiot to completely ignore a real threat to the ship, 2) the smaller ships don't ever get shot at by the BB. Funny thing, if the BB is focusing on one large target he'll still have half or more of his phaser arrays unoccupied by that target and free for swatting down annoying small ships.

Throughout history people have tried to prove many smaller units can bring down larger more capable ones. Throughout history, precluding a technological revolution, the only time this has been made to work is when the people commanding the horde can absolutely drown the larger units in a sea of smaller units and absolutely not give a damn what happens to their people.

No one else here had a problem with my post (asside for arguing the thought was trying to convey).
