I once drove from Oxford to north London, to collect a hard disk, then on the Bedford, then back to Oxford then to Sheffield and then to Liverpool. I started at 3:30pm and finished at 2am. all of that was without any real break. Somewhat more than 360 miles, some on small roads most on overly busy motorways (Freeways to those in the US)

Freeways? Our roads don't follow ancient Roman cattle paths or Druidic ley lines. A 360-mile drive on US highways without breaks would about 3 hours.

True, but this was the last Friday before xmas. That means every motorway is full, all three lanes, for hours on end. Also only about 30% of the journey was on those roads. It once took me 8 hours to go 180 miles on the M6 (one of the two main north-south motorways). Basically, to achieve this you have to go stop-start for just about the whole journey.

Maybe if you're at 120 mph the whole time! I grew up in Northern California, in San Jose, then went to college down in LA. It became kindof a game to see how fast I could get between the two. The highway route is straighter than straight and oh-so boring - the most interesting sight to see (read: smell) is the cattle slaughterhouse. Usually it takes about 4 hours for 300 miles or so, and at 85 miles per hour, I'm one of the slowpokes. Though these days, gas might be expensive enough to have slowed those crazies down.

And it would have been 8 hours if you took old Rt. 1, right?

However, I understand what you mean about traffic. Here in New Jersey, we have the highest population density (taken for an entire state) in the union. When I was a kid, it once took my dad - who worked about 50 miles away from home, and in close proximity to some main arteries - 8 hours to get home.

Ugh. That's terrible. I'm really lucky to have lightrail service in San Jose so I can commute to school on the government's dime. You know who's got it figured out is those Portlanders. They've got GREAT mass transit.

Honolulu has got some nasty traffic as well. The kicker is that there really isn't a need for it, either. If they extended the highway one lane in either direction where it bottlenecks, things would go so much smoother. But no. Our mayor wants to leave his legacy and build a damn monorail system out here. How will that help? It's not the the city is several hours away. It would take as long if not longer to wait for the damn thing and endure all of its stops, and then walk or catch the bus to where your going once in town rather than just drive.

Tnhank you for your condolences, everyone. I should clarify something, though. He wasn't locked into a suicidal state. He was locked into the mental state of a twelve-year old. He was 37 when he died, too.

I hurt myself on a daily basis, no biggie. But why did I have to, not once but twice hurt myself during sex last night? FFS, there wasn't enough Tylenol in the house...

How'd you fo it twice? I bent my guy in half once and it took me 3 days to recover.

About driving; I grew up in an eighteen-wheeler the first three years of my life, and spent a good number more in vehicles. Technically, I've been to every state in the US except Alaska, Hawaii and Washington. Needless to say, I'm quite handy on road trips, and no one I've ever met can navigate as well as myself. Plus, I somehow always know my cardinal directions, even while indoors.

On an unrelated note, my damn computer has been acting up again; I think I may have sorted out the problem, but it's old, and I run it way more than I probably soon. If you guys don't hear from me for a while, just assume I'm having to build a new system.
