See, I think the "alternate reality" setting is great, but people don't seem to understand the concept.

Spock Prime could try to make this universe progress more like the one he comes from, or he might try to get back to his universe, but he can't "restore" the timeline.

The original timeline hasn't changed at all. Picard, Worf, etc are all still there in the post Nemesis 24th century, which has recently lost Romulus, and is likely going through a major political shakeup.

This is a separate, parallel universe, possibly created by Nero's time-travel. People say things like "restore the timeline" or "they've made the rest of Trek irrelevant!" without grasping that all the other stuff is still canon, and the new movie(s) is(will be) set in an alternate (or parallel, or whatever semantics you want to use) universe.

More importantly, I'd like to see some stills of that bike Kirk had.

Guess I'll have to wait for the dvd to come out.

I doubt they will be any bigger. There just is a point where they become unpractical imho. For instance I always wondered what the hell are all this science departments and diplomacy facilities etc. doing when the E-D was chasing once more a pirate or merchantman or some other unimportant stuff.

I wonder if this is a deliberate thing now, that they are going to make the films about what happens when you get there rather than what happens on the way. Journey times of minutes or hours typical from now on? Could be interesting...

You have this right, it's about the action and not about how you got to it. Interesting indeed. Now I just wonder what the Future holds, if the Trek XI Constitution Class is 1100 Meters (Bigger than a Galaxy or Sovereign Class ship) what will the next generation ships be like? I am also wondering if Old Spock Prime will try an attempt to restore the time line back to One he went through. Lots of ideas are now open since the reboot and the 1100 meter Constitutions came out
Where are you getting 1,100 metres from? I thought the accepted number was in the realm of six hundred.

I thought it was 900.

I've seen everything from "3000 feet" to 720 metres. I did some quick scaling as part of an article on the ship's size and got 1,100 metres, but that's very much a preliminary figure.

Well, if you've scaled it then that works for me. I'll go with your number until I see proof otherwise.

Damnit, someone hurry up and publish a TM!

It's my take on the shuttle landing in the bay scene. Here is the article.

Well it's based off the pic of the model. They might have trimmed the aft end of the secondary hull down a little too much.

Also, I fail to see how larger ships are impractical.

Just the same place I got my 1100 meters from. As for some other posts on changing things back to more like the original time line, I suspect if Spock finds a logical way to save Vulcan he will do what it takes to do it. After all he knows the time of the events and could try again to stop the disaster that befell Romulus. All in all regardless of what happens, the alternate time line allows a lot of new things to happen using the original crew, a very nice restart indeed and also many interesting new plot lines too. I look forward to whatever new direction Abram's crew takes this.....

Depends on. If it is stuffed with fancy gimmicks and there is basically no space wasted then it is ok. If they have whole sections or decks empty for the offshot chance that they might need it for a diplomatic conference........ .

The original TOS Enterprise was a good example. The space not filled with machinery was just enough to squeeze in a few science labs conference rooms and the crew quarters whereas the GCS had lots and lots of - lets call it mission specific - space meaning most of the time it was probably not needed, or at least that was the impression I had.

Another point would be the reliance on the crew. The larger the ship is the more crew you need the more complicated it is etc. so I do think given a certain tech level there comes a point where the whole thing is inefficient as hell.

AND, the larger the ship is the more mass it has, meaning it can't be too maneuverable in combat, right?

Even WITH a mass reducing subspace field, there has to be upper limits to its power output and therefore effects, right?

For lack of a better example, even with Starfleet's most advanced warp drive system [and subspace field generators], I can't see something as huge as a super star destroyer being very maneuverable (which, of course, is why its bristling with gun emplacements everywhere).

That would just make another alternate timeline. Vulcan would still be gone in this one. Spock could sleep in for an hour, or get up early; each of those would create another alternate timeline. He can't save Romulus in his own universe, because it's already gone. He could save Romulus in some timeline, but not his original one.

Also, I fail to see how larger ships are impractical.
There comes a point where it couldn't produce enough power to move it.

As shown when the new E dropped out of warp into the debris field, even it had trouble manourvering.
And, the bigger something is, the easier it is to hit (and the harder it becomes to cover blind spots).
No trees were killed in transmission of this message. However, some electrons were mildly inconvenienced.

Yes, that's what I was getting at.
