As for the question of the (first) DS9 Defiant getting a new number, I think it might be that the letter designations are used if a ship is considered a sort of special sentimental successor, but that sometimes, they might just reuse a name after 100 or so years, and they don't consider it quite the same thing. But as for the second DS9 Defiant, that was just stupid - they went to the trouble of renaming another ship, and it was certainly a direct successor, so there's no reason why it shouldn't have had the letter designation. In the DS9 TM, they say that they intended to make it the Defiant-A, but they didn't have the ability.

I always assumed it was attributed to the ledendary status of the 1701. Quite an honor for a Starship.

In the episode 'Where Silence has Lease' Riker read NCC-1305-E as he identified the Yamato. That's the only time I recall hearing another ship getting a letter besides ships named Enterprise.

Is the Yamato's registry in that episode a YATI? Any other time it's listed as NCC 71807.

The 1305-E registration is a mistake. It was given to the ship in an early draft of the script. Mike Okuda planned to change it, but the scene was deleted from the script so he didn't bother. Unknown to him a later revision restored the scene along with the incorrect number; he didn't know until he saw the episode on TV.

Policy was that only the Enterprise got the -A, -B etc suffix as a mark of how important the ship was in Starfleet history. The did reuse ship names for other ships, but without reusing their number. Hence the Intrepid class Voyager is part of will have one in the 74000s rather than 1700s-A.

They broke the rule for the Defiant, just because people like the Defiant so much I guess.

Never understood that.....theey did,'t NEED to change the ships registry number to rename her "Defiant" (IU of course)

Thanks for the intel, behind the scenes stuff is almost as good as the shows.

Nearly every ship in the fleet would have letter designations if that was left cannon.

Not as unlucky as Ardent - the Royal Navy had three of them in the 20th century, and all of them were lost in action.

I don't know - I'm keeping a suspicious eye on the names of the Astute-class boats as they're announced.
