Well there is Relentless, Rogue Star and Star of Damocles. The last two are about a Rogue Trader that gets stuck in the Damocles Gulf Crusade (or so I hear) and apperently butchers everything we know about Imp fleet combat, including the Trek brainbug of engaging at visual range (again, so I hear).Deepcrush wrote:I wish we could see some BFG books. That would be nice. So far there's one that I know of and it covers how the Tau raped both and Imp and Chaos fleet in order.
Imp fleet comes, gets hit by torps that are being shot from (like every other tau weapon) outside of sensor range. The Chaos fleet comes and gets the same. Tau feel good and novel ends.

Visual range? WTF! The Nova cannon is used to hit targets ENTERING THE SYSTEM THE FLEET IS IN! If you're within visual range when that thing goes off, you're going down with the target ship. Most Imp crews never even knew what their were fighting.

*shrug* Don't ask me, I haven't read them yet. They always seem to be out of stock. Though I'm with you, in most of the WH40K books I've read combat takes place at extreme range.Deepcrush wrote:Visual range? WTF! In BFG, Imp ships use augers that seem to act like SONAR. It gives them a 2D picture of the ships and planets around them. Holding fire until you are only a few km's away in space means your enemy is going to kick your ass the whole way in.

Given that 500KM was described as "suicidal point-blank range" for short-range bombers, I've no idea how that idiot managed to think they fought at visual range.
I've recently started into Relentless. Not bad so far, but nothing stellar.

In ST we see that ships like to hit very small specific points which gives a bit of room for the "up close" view. In BFG, no one has that kind of targeting ability save the Necrons. They like to just beat each other to little pieces at long enough ranges to give them time to move and intercept enemy fire.

Well that I could see. Two ships in orbit, not gaining line of sight until short range. My problem is when ships wait for visual range in OPEN SPACE.
