Johnny Starfleet wrote:Could that mean that they might even make things worse? If two ships collide, you get a massive change in inertia, throwing everyone about the ship. Then the ID kicks in, maybe mid flight for a crewman, and arrests their momentum to a dead stop very quickly. Maybe they should turn that bad boy off and use seatbelts in combat instead.
We've never seen that, though. We HAVE seen inertial dampers failing to respond to an unplanned event (like getting fired upon) but never a reaction from them in the other direction.

Well, when the E-D's saucer collided with the ground everyone on the ship got thrown forward.

Grey area, I guess. Hitting the ground certainly wasn't an input helm maneuver, although one could certainly say that the impact was expected and could therefore have been relayed to the dampers through the helm. The reaction to the impact could be attributed to any or all of a) nobody did actually alert the dampers; b) they were offline or diminished in capacity; or b) that sort of sudden stop was too much for the dampers to completely mitigate.

I'd count it as unexpected. Yes, they knew the impact was coming, but there wouldn't have been instantaneous updates on what was happening, and what was going to happen, as would have been the case with manoeuvres. It's much the same as with torpedo impacts - it's obvious that a torp's going to hit, as they've often got enough time to call a "brace for impact". The dampers still don't do much good though.

Fair enough.

I think itr was yelled "Inertial dampeners are offline!" right after the saucer was hit by the shockwave. Though I could be remembering any of the other episodes with crashes.

Its "Primary Stabelizers offline" - whatever they are - followed by "Engaging secondary systems"

Oh. Then I must be remembering a Voyager ep.
Thats two messups in less than an hour.

If the Inertial Dampeners were off completly the sudden stop likely would have killed most of the crew. I would say that they just can't handle that type of situation, sure they keep everyone from ending up as a red splatter but you still get knocked around.

I should have been more specific in my "bouncing off each other" post. I was seeing two ships passing close enough to each other for the two shield "bubbles" to touch each other, not as a defense against a full on collision. Should have been more specific. Sorry.

I'd just guess that an impact of that power was just to much for the dampeners to do, it probably did slow down the impact somewhat, no one was seriously injured.

Exactly. They were in a reactive, not proactive, situation; were probably at diminished capacity; and in any event were faced with a big sudden stop for which they weren't primarily designed.

Agreed.

What are people's opinions on a hypothetical TNG and DS9 remastered, such has been done (unseen by me) with TOS, with new FX shots where some of the kitbashed designs could be replaced by other ships, both ones from present canon and new, better designed vessels?
I've grown hostile to these kind of projects, largely thanks to a certain Mr G Lucas of Marin County, CA, USA, but some of the "Frankenstein ships" I would be glad to see the back of - the Curry Class in particular I can't bear to look at.
So do we accept these ships as inviolably canon, like it or not, or are people open to a little rewriting of ST history?
Personally, I'd be very cautiously in favour of changes, as long as the originals where not airbrushed from existence, as I feel it's important to be able to see things as they where first shown. It could also deal with some of the registry number and other inconsistencies.

I like the remastered TOS over the original but thats not saying much.
Honestly I dont think TNG or DS9 need remastering, maybe a few of the very early TNG episodes but mostly they are fine.
