I've been a McCain supporter for a while now...our positions on almost all issues are pretty much identical, but the main reason why I've chosen him above Huckabee and others is because he's the candidate I consider most trustworthy. Huckabee is my number two candidate; he just seems like a pretty cool guy, and he's also got a good deal of integrity.

Romney, on the other hand, I have something of a grudge against; from his glib stance on torture, to his crazy hardline stance on illegal immigration, he and I never really hit off. But more than simply his stance on the issues, if McCain is the most trustworthy candidate, then Romney wins hands down for the least trustworthy. To put it simply, I don't trust the guy; everything I've seen of him indicates that he's willing to do anything to obtain the nomination, changing his positions to fit with whatever his audience wants to hhear. When he was running for governor of Massachussets, they got the moderate/liberall Mitt. But now that he's going for the Presidential nomination, he's apparently overnight morphed into the True Blue Conservative. Sorry, but I'm not buying...

My personal hopes are resting on a McCain/Huckabee ticket...if they're running against a Hillary ticket, then I could easily see a Republican victory come November.

The main thing is, just ask an Arkansan about Huckabee, or a New Yorker about Giuliani. They will spew frothing rage and hate at you, most likely.

Romney has the problem of a) being Mormon, which all the evangelicals hate for little to no good reason (probably because the Mormons demonstrate how to run an ethical missionary drive...) and b) having been quite, quite socially liberal as Massachusetts governor. He got in on Civil Unions and other such liberal blasphemies.

McCain, of course, only runs well among war supporters, since he wants to keep the troops there period.

The end result is that the republican race is really cracked.

If I had to pick from the Republican contenders, I'd have to say McCain has the integrity/war hero/history of standing up to his party thing going, but Romney is a bit more charismatic. Unfortunately in this day and age, the fact that he is a Mormon may count against him in certain areas.

McCain has also shown a weakness for following the party line which I think will hurt him in the near future. It really is up to the Dems for this one. If EITHER Clinton or Obama run then McCain or Huckabee would be the best hope. If Clinton and Obama run together then its just a lost battle and the Reps should look to rebuilding their party for the next 8 years.

I can never tell if people are being serious or tongue in cheek when they refer to the civil war that way. My fear that they are genuinely still upset about it is one of the many things that keeps me out of the south.

Ah, yes. The southern United States. Denying they got their asses kicked since 1865.

As for Romney to be honest I don't mind a little wavering on some issues in a republican candidate, because it seems like to get the nomination it helps to be a little hard line, but to actually win the presidency you have to score well with the moderates (or seriously mobilize the base, but the congressional elections seem to demonstrate that won't cut it this time).

Also I think if someone never wavers in any of their positions over a large span of time they're probably a bad candidate for president as you have to be able to adapt. For example one of the many things they listed as flip-flops by Kerry was, as I recall, his change in position on Cuba. Which, you'd think, might have something to do with the cold war ending.

Honestly, the vast majority of people down here are perfectly normal...sure, we have our share of nuts, but not really disproportionate to the rest of the nation.
