Funny, that's the scene (in Train Job) that sold it for me too. I started looking at the characters alot more closely after that, and seeing quirks in all of them that I liked. I really took to Book though, it sucked for him to be killed off in the movie.

The series setting is pretty well-produced for what it is, but certainly isn't ground-breaking. The show wins on writing, not on atmosphere.

I agree. If I just wanted space western, I'd watch the anime Trigun and call it a day. The consistency with the setting is good, but that's not what makes the show.

They try to get enough money from one job to make it until the next job, while trying to stay close to their morals, avoiding the main authority, and other worse criminals.

It sure does seem built that way, even with the occasional departure to focus on one character or another (e.g., "Jaynestown.") I thought it was a workable dynamic for what the show was, though it may have been a contributing factor to the show's short run.

The ensemble cast is what makes this show a step (or 3) above the rest. No technobabble, no mystics, just a little bit of mystery, a touch of humor, and a gritty galaxy to fly around in...

And a really cool ship to fly around that gritty galaxy in.
