It doesn't even makes sense from an evolutionary point of view - it's a cross between the Connie and the Galaxy, whereas it should (and the conference room relief did) look like a cross between the Galaxy and the Excelsior.

Has anything, excepting kitbashes, drawn design inspiration from the Excelsior in any but the most general way?

I do find it interesting that this ship was the first to field phaser arrays. I hope they got tested out first and Starfleet just didnt throw them on here and hope for the best.

Nope... it's still Starfleet.

I noticed that, but I'd bet that it's more convergent evolution than a deliberate design influence.

You're right. Definately an Excelsior influence there.

The round 1/2 ball nacell tips look odd.

I would guess that those collectors were a hasty attempt to give the ship an added "archaic" feel since her first appearance was in TNG.

OK. But at least it makes sense for what it appears chronologically. The NX is nice-looking, but as a viewer, I appreciate this one much more than the Akiraprise.

I like the ambassador class personally. Sure enough its even worse looking then me on a Friday morning. But the class itself was a well built ship. Look at the beating that she took and that the E-C was willing to go head to head with no less then 4 warbirds makes me think she was a testament to her designers. What killed the ambassador class in my opinion was that with the galaxy and nebula classes coming out so soon afterwards that there wasn't enough time to really start a production run. The excelsior was the best ship around for 80 years, no shock to me that someone may have wanted to replace it.

I think its just fact of the times that new designs come out faster. The tech is increasing so fast that new designs are needed to feild it. I wouldnt be suprised if we see yet another new flag ship in 10 years.
