In the movie?
On the website it clearly says Warp 8 is the maximum speed.

They do say that, when they are heading back from Vulcan to Earth I think. But bear in mind this is after the battle they've just been through, so maximum speed may not have been an option.

Yes, but that was after they had significant damage from the attack.

Ok, I can accept that.

Unfortunately the scale of the ship seems to be all over the place. Many of the construction scenes do make it look to be in the 700 to 900 meter range. The shuttle bay seems a bit iffy to use to compare directly to the original ship. The shuttles look larger and so does the bay. The saucer edge does look to be two decks thick, but they could be larger than normal sized windows which could run it up to 5 to 6 decks thick.

But if you look at the shot of Kirk on his bike looking at the ship, it doesn't look like it's something 2.5 times as long as a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.

We see the shuttles compared directly to humans in the deployment scene, so when we see the shot of the shuttles entering the bay, I think we could use that to establish a rough size for the ship (when screencaps become available). I thought the interior of the shuttlebay looked roughly equal in size to the one from TMP. I mean, if the ship were 700-900 meters, it would have dwarfed those shuttles to a much greater extent.

I dunno, looking from the bike it dominated the landscape and it was a heck of a long way off.
Yes, the shuttles are probably the best place to make a length judgment but I suspect that even that will turn out larger than the old E.

Good point; if it were much larger, we'd expect a more cavernous shuttlebay, with a LOT more shuttles; the hanger in the Trade Federation battleship from The Phantom Menace comes to mind.
I read that, at least in Stargate, sizes can vary wideley from shot to shot; someone was commenting that the FX crew apparently deliberately scales up the Daedelous to make it look like a match for larger ships, so maybe they do something similar here.

Anybody got any official backstage sources?

Only the 3000 feet (914 metres) quote from the guy that did the CGI.

The shuttles were parked on either side of the shuttle bay perpendicular to the line of travel of the ship. You'd need a minimum of three shuttle lengths to make that kind of set up work. My best guess is that those shuttles were 11 to 15 meters long. That would give the shuttle bay a width of about 35 to 50 meters. Anyone got a picture of the ship handy to try and scale the rest of the ship from that?
We've also got a good view of the main... well I guess it's a view port now. It looked to be about 2 meters high and 5 long. I was actually surprised by it's placement and size because it makes the bridge itself look much smaller compared to the central dome on top of the saucer.
The ship may not be 3000 feet long, but to me it looked significantly larger than the E-nil we're used to seeing.

I just saw the movie last night, and I must say that the Enterprise seems nowhere near the 900 meter mark.
I also peg the shuttles roughly at the 10-12 meter mark, and both times we see the shuttles near the ship, they do a nice pass close to it.
It seemed that perhaps 30-35 shuttles would equal to the length of the ship, so to me the ship looked to be in the 300-350 meters long.

Wait, are you sure you're not thinking of the Academy hangar bay on Earth? For the ship's shuttle bay, we just got a brief look in from space as the shuttles were flying in.

Yeah, I was surprised by the placement as well, and I'm trying to figure out exactly how the bridge is placed in the ship (and what the upper dome is).

Nope, I'm thinking of the Enterprise. I specifically watched it closely because I knew the question of the size of the Ent had been raised here. As they head into the shuttle bay you can clearly see shuttles set up like I described.

To me it looks like it's just a slightly raised portion of Deck 1.

Hmm, maybe you watched it more closely than I did then. The shuttlebay does seem to be wider, relative to the ship, than on the TOS or TMP version.
