OK, yeah, I never saw that epp. But it seems that it can be used as a escape pod launch point, but there was definitely room for some shuttles in there.

It would seem to me that these ships could easily perform patrol duties.

i could see them on borders/in regions which face 'lesser' powers, talarians, pakleds, acamarians etc, after all not every civilisation is a klingon empire...

We really don't know a lot about these ships. Just some of the very most basic stats like dimensions and top speeds. It's hard to judge the usefulness of the designs when you've got next to nothing on them.

In general though we're talking about a fleet of thousands of ships. Tens of thousands IMO. When you've got that many ships you can afford to make a run of fifty or a hundred ships that tries something new and see if it works. Even if it's not great the general plug and play ability of most Federation tech allows you to make even a dog half way useful.

We don't even know that much - all we've got to work on, in most cases, is a few hazy shots from FC.

I seem to recall the DS9 tech manual having speeds and general armament in it but I can't say for sure because somewhere during all my moves in college I lost my copy.

It did, but the TMs are non-canon.

Ok, well then yeah, we've got absolutely nothing to go on for judging these ships so a what's the point comment is kinda off base.

Maybe just looking at a Saber cures cancer.

Seeing as there's nothing to go on, you may as well invent a role for them in your personal Trek, that's basically what Graham has done anyways.

A poster above mentioned that the Federation should be able to afford limited runs of ships, it's not like that doesn't happen right now. And there will always be roles for small, limited ships; escort duty, system patrol, SAR, QRF, that sort of thing.

It seems to me that Starfleet would rather go for a variety (for whatever reason) rather than tried and true designs. OK, OU I understand wanting to make a rocking fight scene for FC, but SOME kind of info IU would have been nice. I mean, after all, how hard would it been to insert a line in the dialog like "Let's see how the Borg fare against these new designs." It's not even completely clear that these ARE new designs to me, aside from the way they look.

Anyway, this has been bugging me for a while, and now my rant is over.

That's a good idea. With a better line, that is.

Ok try this

Riker "I'm sure the Borg will be in for a rude awaking, Captain. We've had YEARS to design and field new ships. This time it won't be so easy for them."

Picard "I hope your right, Number One."

Considerably better. :)
