One of the best sci-fi shows ever made. I'd love to see any sort of continuation.

Three things i loved about it:

1 The overall feel of where humanity was. Star Trek gives us kind of a nice view of how the future will be, where as firefly is more of a grungy not so nice, almost old-west style justice set in the future. For some reason it always had a sort of Star Wars crossed with Starcraft feel.

2 The music is awesome, and works perfectly with the overall feel.

3 The fact that stuff in space doesn't make noise.

Well, you can think up viable excuses for sound in space in some other sci-fi. Devices that convert sensor input into sound being one of them, which would be a good idea in some circumstances, as it would allow a shuttle pilot (for example) to use all his senses to determine what was happening around him, rather than just his eyes. Which is more intuitive - a computer screen printing of the direction and a range of an approaching contact, or a steadily increasing engine noise from the appropriate direction?

It annoys me that people complain about the whole sound in space thing.

I mean, take 2001. The whole sequence from the bone to the space station is praised because the ships and stuff make no noise, right? But... you can hear music the whole time! I don't think there's music in space, do you?

And the same applies to most every scene in every movie. Music, music, music. As if everybody has a full studio orchestra following them around all the time. How weird is that? (Actually I think it would be great if everybody had an orchestra following them around playing mood music all the time, but I have to face the fact that they don't.)

Firefly is no exception. I've not seen a space shot yet that didn't have music playing in it. And I have never yet heard anybody complain about this abomination of the laws of physics.

Of course the reason is that the music is just part of the moviemaking process, a way to build mood and involve the viewer in what's going on. So it gets a free pass from everybody. I don't mind that, just like I don't mind engines growling and weapons going zaaaaap!

But the people who do complain about those things never complain about the music. Wonder why.....

Thats a damned fine point. And i have no problem with weapons making a noise. it makes the film feel better.

The music is not something they are trying to sell as a reality in the movie, where sound effects directly caused by actions and characters int the show/movie are. If there were a guy in space with a boom box, then no, i would be infuriated if it made noise. And, I think it adds a lot to the space shots by not having the sound. If done properly, it can be just as engaging as all the zooming and pewpewing of your star treks and star wars.

I like that Firefly got it right with there being no sound in space, but I don't have any particular problem with that science screw-up in other sci-fi.

Yeah, it's not like I walk around all day with the problem of sound FX in sci-fi films weighing on my mind. But as DarkOmen said, the score is supposed to be understood as NOT being part of the actual goings-on - the actual sound is supposed to be understood as a definite part of them.

I don't agree with that at all. If they had characters hearing things in space then yeah. But in the likes of ST they have never once done that, nor anything I know of to indicate that sound in space is "really" meant to be happening.

Characters hearing things in space is the mark of truly atrocious sci-fi.

As I said, I don't let it detract from my enjoyment of a film. But the fact that the sound FX are tied to an on-screen occurence, while the score is not, indicates that those sounds are supposed to be "really" happening.

Just to not start a new thread. I just saw the firefly series and it's awsome.

Though they seem to be making a concious effert to address every complaint leveled a sci fi in the past. Including seeing someone actually using a bathroom, and the whole thing where "they're never follow us through here" is followed the chasers just flying above the mountains and other bits of terrain.

It would be sweet if they could do something more with it. But they're making that somewhat difficult for themselves. Something before the series or after the movie would be a bit off, and the stuff in between seems to be pretty well filled up by the comics.

So it'd be tricky.

I agree. It'd be tough to continue at the point after Serenity. I wouldn't mind a bit if they tried, though.

Though I suppose they could always do Firefly: The Next Generation. Those ships'll outlive you, ya'know? Though they should really air with a different network. And I worry that the controversy, edgyness, and sexual content that I bet most fans like will kill it's chances for the kind of syndication success Trek had that brought it back.
