Question, how are we going to lay claim? With a military presence? In the IC thread? Or just get colony ships on the way?

All three, would be my guess. I would imagine that people would deploy a small, and I mean small (5 ship) detachment to the system in question to check for other ships. Non-occupied, proceed with the claim. Occupied, either you ask them to move, negotiate, or drive them off if you're feeling risky.

The other method is to PM the group you think will try to take it and make pre-arranged plans. Thats the safest route, IMO.

There is nothing effectively blocking races from deploying hundreds of ships to claim a huge area of space full of potential colonies. Now me, personally, I would not recognize any claim that is not substantiated by people on the ground living on a planet. In my view if you want to call it yours you need to make the effort to improve it. Until you colonize it it should in my view be fair game for the most part. But thats just my personal opinion and how I would handle the subject.

However you guys can resolve it anyway you wish. If there is not a standard and accepted practice there is nothing in the rules that prevents there from being two (or more) colonies from competing powers on the same planet. If you guys want to start shooting down colony ships more power to you. Hell, nothing stops you from exterminating or enslaving a colony during this process either.

It is the safest rout and for larger powers on the outside it works pretty well. Big gave everyone a lot of room to grow on this. Smaller powers my find themselves fighting it out, unlike the big powers they are in need of the growing room.

Unless of course the bigger powers decide to take worlds from the smaller powers anyway. There might be some tactical advantages for the big powers to take key systems. Then it gets ugly.

Yeah, just don't try to take powers from the little guys when you really don't know what kind of tricks they have up their sleeves. Just throwing that out there since both of the really small powers are fairly unknown to the outside as to what our weapons and such are like, they may pack a bigger punch than you expected.

Depending on the power, the smaller guys wont have as much to loose either.

Ok, here is how we will handle this to make it the least messy from a claiming of colonies point of view.

Add any world you wish to colonize to your spreadsheet for this coming turn. You are all making a ton of deals already anyway so we might as well just open things up and have at it. I WILL PUBLISH ALL OF THE CLAIMS AT THE SAME TIME so that none of them will have a perceived legitimacy of being "first".

How you guys sort it out from there will be your business.

Sorry if we've harrassed you somewhat. pre-emptive deal making probably isnt the most fun thing for the GM.

There is nothing really wrong with it, I just sort of meant that everyone should let the whole issue lie dormant until next week. Some have started making deals, others have not so that was not wholly fair.

Just have at. I will give everyone till Sunday at midnight for their turns which should include any colonies you want to move colonist to immediatly.

Any guesses on the costs, here, boss?
