Some excellent points from my esteemed Klingon ally. :)

I had to figure out from the start how to balance a fleet like mine. Where the UFP is pretty well balanced in all things. The KDF is only balanced in that with as many good traits... it has just as many bad ones.

I have a similar problem. Romulan ships, for the most part are bigger than they are powerful. My large D'D only has a CR940. Also, the limited shield tech means to expand such costs a lot.

The advantage for the RSE would be that your shipyards are used to building larger and rather powerful warships if you equip them as such.

And combat is not driven by the DITL rating really. It is on your battle stats sheet. If you have very fast ships in terms of warp that does you no good at all in combat. But it plays a huge role in the DITL ratings.

Well, what would be an average for each class of ship then? To me, having 7 rapid fire quantums and 200,000 terawatt phaser arrays, coupled with a 10,000,000 terawatt shield seems bloody high but didn't actually come out all that great.

Scratch that, I see where my errors are. I'm thinking ships that toe to toe with the likes of Sovereign classes as being Battleships, when they are more like battlecruisers. Ignore me, I see where I am going wrong now.

You also have to remember that the original Sovereign design is now nearly 30 years old and it was a pre dominion war design. The Defiant is even older at this point.

The Dominion War was, as far as I know, the first really major, winner takes all war that had been fought since the times around the Original Series, possibly even before that. There have been a few larger and long lasting fights in between but none of those wars ever really seemed to threaten the existence of the powers involved like this one did. The Sovereign and Norexan were about 3 times more powerful than the ships they replaced (and they were lighter). Its not unreasonable to see the power of ships jump a similar amount again over the 20 plus years that followed that war once all the lessons learned are incorporated into new designs.

In my view there were years of little to no development because no one felt threatened. Thats why all those old ships were able to stick around so long. The war had two effects. First it made people more sensitive to the fact they need to be defended. Second it wiped out a lot of old ships, opening space for new ones.

Add to that the fact that there has pretty much been an arms race and some hostility from the outset between major factions and you get to where we are today.

Doesn't help that I didn't take into account advancement in my original ships. So my tech was way way way behind when starting.

That was sort of by design on my part. Your species has never faced combat before, being the only ones in your region that can operate in that mess. You are honestly probably lucky your ships are armed at all at the outset.

Also remember how expensive that ship would be. The number of torps its going to burn through, the power needed to feed those guns and even more for those shields.

So Mark, whens this hero's gathering of yours? Are we going to RP it out or is it just considered done with?

An FYI. Turn around might be slow this turn. A major sheet modification will add the ready reserve and mothball system and....

wait for it.....

Colonization.

More on that to follow. But expect a new map as well.
