Blackstar - phones are unfortunately a necessary evil, but many folks I know are completely abandoning land lines. Many cell phone providers provide included or no-charge long distance.
yeah. its a chipped tooth as after 600 odd miles total the shift action is alot looser. was a great fun trip. I was in a line of cars, mainly your boring german-beater with a 2.0L-D engine. Though a 4.2L V8 Audi A8L Gasoline Quattro superturbodeath shot past me and gave me an erection in the wake of its glory.

You can turn that off.
Edit: Though I always have GPS location on, due to the amount of travelling I do. Most of it on deserted or poorly policed highways.
You can turn it off by removing the battery, yes. Otherwise, you can be tracked through cell towers, even if the phone is off.
It would still be useful to make calls, though. I just don't see the reason to pay $50-100 a month for something like that.

It's illegal here for the cell company to release your location if it's disabled except in 911 emergencies, so I don't have a problem with it. Honestly if I was up to something than I would just leave it somewhere, like a large metal dumpster.

Can't you get pre-paid cards down there? They have ones up here for 10$, have to buy the phone but you can get a second hand one for a reasonable price.

Here we have the awesomeness of Bush's "spy on your citizens legislations". The wiretapping "law" was just renewed, IIRC.

I understand the concerns, especially financially, but how does one live without a phone? Blackstar has hir girlfriend communication issues; adults might have things like jobs or something crazy like that; I like to check on my daughter now and again; etc.

It's called the internet. Phones are intrusive and inefficient.

How do you propose he check on his daughter via the net? She's not even a pre-teen yet.

So? I've been using the net since 2nd grade, and that's only because that's when the school got internet. There's also webcams, which are far more effective then phones, which don't have camaras. You actually can see what the kids are doing rather then take their word for it.

Do you have any idea what it costs for internet rates on a phone that he can use to watch her on cam? Assuming he even lets her on the PC. Plus he does this thing called work, which requires him to have a phone for the company to call him.

You didn't address the work thing in your last post, so you can't just pull that out to make me look foolish. And why wouldn't he let her on his computer? Just passward protect his username so she can't stumble across his porn on accident and badda-bing badda-bang everything's fine.

I'm pretty sure Mikey's daughter is about 3 or 4.
And somehow I think you genuinely believe she is still okay to be using the net...

BS, it's a legitmate issue. Adults work, it's a simple fact of life. He even mentions it to you.

This may be hard for a non-parent to grasp but some don't want their kids on the net or PC's at all.
