Why are the helicopters tied to the plane, what am I missing?

The plane is refueling the helicopters I think. Based on all the Buck Danny I have read, that's what happens when airplanes are tied like this.

I am honestly not sure if that is a real comment or not...

That's a pipe. It's transferring fuel to them so they can fly for longer.

Mid-air refueling. It takes quite a bit of fuel to take off and logistically speaking, mid-air refueling is much easier than having the helicopter land then refuel.

That's make perfect sense. Taking off without full fuel compliment and refueling in air allow easier take off with the same load.

That and taking off takes up a lot of fuel because it is much easier to fly in the air than on the ground.

Doing that allow heavier load?

All planes are designed to take off at their maximum load out.

But what I am saying is even if the plane is at it's lightest, it still takes more fuel to take off than if they were flying. Planes require to be at a certain power to takeoff. More power=more fuel.

Ok it just improve the range (and that's already nice).

Right, yeah I see it now. I tend to forget mid-air refuelling exists as it just seems so bonkers to me.

What is bonkers to me is jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft. But that is the inner ejection seat repairman in me.
