Indeed, and I'd put the M1911 right there with it. However, I don't know if either one of them could be called "notorious," as in causing fear on sight or having a reputation of instant certain death.

To be honest, if you're talking about a specific gun that puts real fear into the general population, then I'd argue that there isn't one. Guns are scary things in and of themselves, and it's the "oh crap he's pointing a gun at me I could DIE!" that is scary. The fact that the gun happens to be one particular model over another probably doesn't even enter most people's heads.

Experts of course are better informed about such things, but whilst they may know enough to find certain weapons fearsome, surely that's tempered by the fact that they also know it's limitations, weaknesses, and the kinds of things they should be doing to defend against it and try to counterattack it successfully. I can imagine a division of soldiers being respectful of certain weapons, but I can't imagine them doing anything like "They're armed with AK47s? God, we'd better stay the hell away from these guys then!"

The Luger was notorious for jamming, does that count?

I'd nominate the 12 gauge, the manufacturer is irrelevant but who doesn't instantly recognize the sound of one being cocked?

While that my be true, it has nothing to do with the question. The point is that there are weapons out there better known through history by both expert and non-expert alike and has carried its name with both fear and awe.

In which case there are probably only two, maybe three, in this thread that count - the AK and the 88, maybe the buzzsaw depending on who you're talking to. The Peacemaker could be added to that as well if it hasn't already.
