BTW, even though mowing does nothing to the ground ivy, it smells absolutely phenomenal when I run over it. Before I identified it (the leaves lack the arrowhead shape of a deadnettle,) I was half-ready to believe I had athelas growing in my back yard.
As far as dandelions go, my Dad does this and it works. Take a chisel or a long sharp object that you don't mind being dirty. Dig around the weed around the root (the root are about two inches deep) and you should be able to pull it out root and all. It takes a bit of practice, but it will definitely get rid of the your dandelions. Throw the weeds aways in your trash. It won't get rid of them completely but won't spread as quickly. Problem is that your neighbors dandelions will eventually migrate to your lawn. My Dad's lawn was once covered with them but now over the past ten years he has only maybe a dozen or so which he takes out.

I assume you can probably do this with other deep rooted weeds too.

I'm really not nearly that dedicated. The phosphorous-free fertilizer cum narrow-spectrum herbicide seems to have done well, and a nice short cut deadheaded the corpses.

Well there is an option then.

Yeah it takes a bit dedication. My Dad's lawn isn't that pretty to begin with. It's just victory he has in 25 years. Somehow though the onion-weed-thingy went away too. Those things can't pull out without pulling out a softball size chunk of dirt with it.

But this year it seems that his lawn is doing well. This is without doing anything to it except mowing it.

I wish I had a lawn but on the other hand, happy since I don't have to mow it.

I've only got one number, thought it was the house one. I'll give it a try, but if he's in the hospital, he may have a hell of a time answering it.

Let's hope he gets well. Aside from that and social support there is little else we can do.

I've noticed a lack of activity, too. Some boards haven't had a post in a bit.
