I'm not sure what the big deal is in the UK, except possibly the fact that yet another commoner marrying into the royal line (and maybe staying married this time) gives hope to the rest of the nation. Over here, I think the alien-ness of the idea of royalty and nobility, and the great deal of pomp (and somewhat less circumstance) that attends them, is what holds interest. That and, for the female viewers, the whole "princess/fairy tale" paradigm.

It's because an enormously large percentage of the population are still quite royalist. The majority population, if they supported...I don't know, Kerry Katona, would watch her wedding if they had the chance. This is no different, only its far more important because even if not in practice, in technicality and in word of law the royals are in command of the state. If Barack Obama's wedding were televised, I'm sure an inordinate sum of American's would watch it. Now I'm not saying that changes any person's views on it, I'm just simply stating that telly addict people watch it if its on. Simple.

I forget the exact wording of that line in one of the Naked Gun comedies (RIP Leslie Nielson) about how it seems silly to Americans to have a Queen (this happens during a speech in the fictional Queen's visit to LA, naturally)

No offense of course, but that sprung to mind to illustrate one of the different cultural aspects across the pond.

Well, to be fair. A lot of Americans still see the King & Queen of England as THE KING AND QUEEN. There are still a lot of Pro-England places in the US.

Interesting note: an American was one of the Household Regiment cavalrymen to escort the carriage. He had dual citizenship with Canada, and as a citizen of the Commonwealth was allowed to join the RA... and eventually to become a member of the Household Regiment.
