Though it's easy to see how that happened. They're both big ships, and big ships need a lot of time to stop. Both crews probably saw what was going to happen about 5 minutes before the actual crash, but were unable to do anything about it.

Funny - if you replace the robot with a V2, you'd have gotten much the same reaction in 1943 - but it would be true.
