I noticed I suddenly don't have enough trade units available. How am I losing them?????
Trade goods are a function of your "free economy".

Here is how I will explain it. Rather than force players to allocate funds for boring stuff that governments do (food, schools, shelter, public transit, holo-suite porn addiction treatment ect) that is all driven by your system of government. What is labled as GDP really is not really GDP so much as it is a measure of your non-government economy that you can tax for income. It is assumed that all shipbuilding, military projects ect are government projects and thus the people and capital employed in such activities are effectively untaxed and generate no income (essentially you would be paying yourself taxes out of the money you paid out to them in the first place, when you net that you you are just out the amount you paid them to begin with less taxes, its simpler to just remove them from the equation).

Basically all your worlds generate income at a certain rate depending on your government type. You can see the output of this for your major worlds in column G of the systems tab and for the minor worlds below that. Since you can't do anything with minor worlds except extract income they will grow a bit each turn as your population grows or shrink when you have population loss.

This is where variables come into play on your major worlds an impact your economy.

In column D there is a maximum industrial capacity rating for each major world. This represents NOT the most goods you could theoretically produce but the most military goods you could produce AND still maintain the quality of life your people expect. For example a military dictatorship will allow for very high levels of military production (assuming you can find the cash to feed such projects on your crippled economy) for a given population base. But in a military dicatorship people overall create taxable income at a lower rate. Such economies are traditionally quite inefficient at anything but building large numbers of military goods (and often they suck at that) so they struggle to produce tax revenue. Democracies have the opposite problem. Their people are productive but they demand a lot of things that are no fun (see above). Thus you can't just turn the whole economy over to producing your massive fleet of giant space battleships.

Now, some systems would let you turn one or two worlds into massive factory worlds churning out all the goods for your war machine while other planets are basically Garden of Eden like. This system won't allow you to do that on the assumption that moving such a volume of goods to sustain such a world would be prohibitive. Each world must sustain itself BEFORE anything is sent along to the national government level.

So basically column G on that sheet is what each world has avaliable for you to tax at some rate for the national government after that world has met its needs and done whatever shipbuilding you have assigned it to do. Massive shipyards take lots and lots of workers out of taxable jobs and will drag on your cash economy.

The next thing that can have a large impact is a large military. The stuff in cell C-42 is there for a reason. As your military gets bigger and bigger it pulls more and more people into it. For every man you have on the front lines there are many more supporting them in the logistical areas behind the sceens. That all gets totaled in cell c-42. Those people are subtracted from your remaining population after we remove the people on major worlds. Whatever is left (Total Pop-Major Worlds-Military) get distributed equally among your minor systems.

So if you start adding 100's of millions of soldiers to the front lines you not only create a huge army but a huge backroom of quartermasters, communications specialist, doctors, lawyers, body bag handlers and so on that starts to impact your economy as well.

This all plays into trade because it operates on the assumption that if you are impact the avaliability of people to produce taxable goods and services at home you would have a proportional impact on the amount of trade goods they can produce as well. Trade is just a modified percentage of what is stated as GDP on the income and balance sheet but is really just a number representing your taxable economy.

Errr...wow.

So, in short.....as I build ships and Starbases, I'm losing trade goods because the manufacturers are in the military?

If I could get sheets early tomorrow morning (my time) then I should hopefully be able to get them turned around and back out to everyone by the end of the day.

Yeah, I know, but I meant what Staplic considered Early Morning, Since I'd consider 8 AM late morning and "A serious lie-in"
