Not in the UK they weren't. Mercury doesn't exist here. By the way this is a Cortina.ChakatBlackstar wrote:Well I know that, but Capri's are sold under Mercury, not Ford.Mikey wrote:Ford and Mercury are actually the same manufacturer. Look it up if you don't believe me.

Re: What's the latest in people's lives?
Stock cars in Stock Car racing? That went out in the 70's. Well, started going that way since the Plymouth Superbird, a car capable of sustaining 220 MPH on the track. That went too fast for NASCAR official's tastes.Fair races are like that. Cars are freqently getting sideswiped, rammed, spun, get put into the wall etc.
And here they're clearly reaching out to reliant
Well, I can see where you're coming from. However that doesn't quite work here, unless poopledoog was a nickname for the cars. But they've standardized the cars into the Car of Tommorrow, like this one:The difference is totally irrelevant, you where totally unaware of the difference at the time you made the statement. That is what I couldn't believe, it's nothing to do with the items in question. It's as if I said that those NASCAR things are just like poopledoogs, and you say I don't know what a poopledoog is but It's nothing like a NASCAR. It makes no sense, as a poopledoog could be just the same as a NASCAR for all you know. Declaring that you no nothing about an item and then making a statement about the nature of that item is completely illogical. Can you not see that?

No that's not correct. If you say you don't know what something is then you are in no position to make valid statements about it in any way. Poopledoog could be the name for those cars in Aarchistanian for example, it could be the name for a carrot in Africa or an infinite number of things, you are simply not in a position to judge one way or another.ChakatBlackstar wrote:Well, I can see where you're coming from. Spoken without finding out the facts, in a grand tradition. Stock car racing is not only not extinct, it's not even uncommon.

I was still right though.Mikey wrote:Spoken without finding out the facts, in a grand tradition.
Ya...I kinda wish I was old enough to remember Stock Car racing with cars that were actually stock. I should go out and create my own National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. Oh wait....Stock car racing is not only not extinct, it's not even uncommon.

No, you said actual "stock" stock-car racing was extinct. It is not. That means your statement =/= correct.ChakatBlackstar wrote:I was still right though.
You're the one who incorrectly said it was extinct, not me. Re: What's the latest in people's lives?
How can they even call it an "association for STOCK car auto racing" when none of the vehicles involved are "stock": as in normal, unmodified vehicles that can be bought by normal people?

Well the engines are stock...sorta....How can they even call it an "association for STOCK car auto racing" when none of the vehicles involved are "stock": as in normal, unmodified vehicles that can be bought by normal people?
It did start out stock, when NASCAR first started in 1948, the race cars were indeed production vehicles, but the safety and performance needs of modern racing have required custom-built race cars.

I can't think of a single "stock" vehicle with a 1000 horsepower V-6.ChakatBlackstar wrote:Well the engines are stock...sorta....How can they even call it an "association for STOCK car auto racing" when none of the vehicles involved are "stock": as in normal, unmodified vehicles that can be bought by normal people?
And, thus, they are no longer stock cars. It's like calling a tank brigade "cavalry". A holdover term that should be changed, but for some reason, isn't. I guess NACCAR just doesn't sound as cool.It did start out stock, when NASCAR first started in 1948, the race cars were indeed production vehicles, but the safety and performance needs of modern racing have required custom-built race cars.

Racing with actaul cares that are "stock" is still alive and well. Though it doesn't tend to make it onto the major networks or pay per view you'll find it in every state at some fairgrounds or speedway.
Common classes are:
Stinger - For newcomers, this is really really stock. Almost no mods allowed beyond the required changes to meet the safety requirments and it has to be a sedan sort of car. I believe restrictions on how potent the car can be for racing are also in place.
Pure Stock/Street Stock- some after market modification allowed, the kind of stuff you could do in your garage, and even then fairly limited. But the car must pretty much consist of stock parts. No throwing in a super engine or any of that.
Pro Stock- from the outside it looks stock, but inside you can do a wide range of mods.
I don't know what their policies are on bringing in a stock supercar. They may just figure that if you want to wreck a $300,000 car to try and win a $10,000 prize you can go on ahead.
But in general engine claim rules keep the playing field fairly level so it's about the driviers (in case you don't know the way it works is that someone who finishes in the top spots but doesn't win can give up their engine and a pittance of cash to take the winners engine. This tends to result in the winners engines being of roughly equivalent value).

Re: What's the latest in people's lives?
Well, the Porsche 935/78 had a flat-6 engine and produced approx. 850-950 hp (can't find an official figure, so I just picked the lowest and highest values I found). It was sort of stock (as in, it came from the factory, though I doubt any normal person would buy one).I can't think of a single "stock" vehicle with a 1000 horsepower V-6.
However, can't think of one with a V-6 engine.

LOL, thanks. And since I'm getting a raise, I'm sure I've been promoted. To what, I'm just not sure.Mikey wrote:Congrats, I guess. Let us know when you're sure.RK_Striker_JK_5 wrote:My schedule at work is now 7-4 instead of 11-8. I've sort of been promoted. I think.
I know little/nothing about racing, so I'll stay out of this for now.
