4) When you finally do take that trip to Japan you can proposition the schoolgirls without needing the phrase book.
1) Might be useful
2,3 and 4) Not in the market.

Theres probably 2 dozen other more useful things I should be learning, like a programming language or basic accounting, or how to check the oil in my car. But doing the sensible thing was never my forte.

Uh dude. Here in Hawaii, if you can speak fluent Japaneese, you'll make friggin' HUGE money.

PLUS...I've found that ALOT of female Japaneese tourists would like to have a little "vacation fun" with some guys out here. If you can speak their language, you'll spend most of your time in various hotel rooms.
You don't need their language, you just need to not be Asian...

1) I use subs, simply because what I want isn't dubbed.

I've always preffered foreign films to be subtitled rather then dubbed.

And I doubt I'll be making a living out of another language anytime soon, I can barely make myself understood in English.

I think I'm running on pure sugar and caffeine right now. I've gotten only 5 hours of sleep in the last 72 hours. I think I'm starting to taste colors.

I just did my first closing shift at the fitness club I lifeguard at. The shift was fine, but not to sound to conservative, but if someone comes into the country wants to be part of a club that has ONE language that the majority of people working there know, understand, and speak, they should be able to speak and understand that language, at least minimally. There was an Asian family of about 6 kids none of whom knew a lick of English, which meant that I could not tell the kids anything, and they happen to be very undisciplined. So it was like hell in water for 2 hours.

I don't consider that unreasonable. I have to assume that since it's a fitness club they had to sign up to make use of the services, which means they must have some understanding of the language to get that far. If their kids don't know english, then the parents need to make the effort to at least make them understand that the club has rules and that they need to be obeyed. And well frankly I just disapprove of kids at a club pool in general. Though I am assuming it's a lap pool, if I'm wrong, I retract that statement.

It's half a lap pool as well as an area for families, so kids are expected, but it just irks me that they won't really try to understand me and they don't obey many of the pools rules.

Everyone understands a polite slap.

They may understand it, but they fear a bible-ring back hand.

Let's not forget, some people with sometimes "forget" English when they don't want to hear it.

I remember weekends like that, although neither sugar nor caffeine were involved.

Having too much candy and coffee would have been the least of my worries. However, let me amend my statement for accuracy:

"I read in the police blotter about my weekends like that, although neither sugar nor caffeine were involved."

Ugh, I hate colds. Not very deadly, but plenty of misery.
