I was thinking more of them pointing inwards very slightly so the two beams can meet at some adjustable point. It would also be very nice when used in conjunction with transphasic torpedos - you could probably destroy any ship or station in one full volley - the phasers cut through a hole towards the power core, then a tranphasic pops inside
Now the kids thinking!
Lets go with it! Two per Sov! Lets see how well the Borg do against that!

I assume he's reffering to the word 'lance'?

Captain Picard's Hair wrote:Recalling Jordanis' objection to the all-competent Main Deflector in my Treknology thread, the real-universe E-D did create a superphaser out of it's main deflector. Unfortunately it was used against a Borg ship which was prepared for it; I'd have been interested to see what that could do against something like those Negh'Vars. Admittedly, it did take quite a while to warm up. Sometimes I've wondered it a ship could simply be modified this way, and Starfleet engineering work out some of the bugs with Geordi's impromptu design. It would have a limited firing arc, due to the saucer above, and (perhaps more importantly
) not look as cool.
Would that weapon have worked if Picard hadn't been assimilated. For that matter, would it have worked if they'd used it straight away, instead of trying to extend the range so as not to get caught up in the blast?

It's not at all sleek, but honestly, I don't believe it's that bad. And all the specs we see make it seem like a logical step between Excelsior and Galaxy. Do we really know if it has separation capabilities?

Judging by the surprise and trepidation shown by experienced Starfleet personnel when the separation feature was used in TNG, I would guess that the GCS was the first example of that particular technology.

Well, maybe of separate and reconnect. An old TOS episode had Kirk telling Scotty to 'jettison the nacelles if he had to' in order to get away from some threat.

I kind of presumed that as a part of "spearation" technology. Even without a prescribed mechanism, you could jettison ANYTHING if being recoverable weren't a requirement. Give me enough cordite and a very forgiving homeowner's insurance policy, and I could jettison my garage.

Hmm, that could probably be used as a very useful bomb, given how explosive nacelles seem, to be.
Though this was TOS, before the dark days of the nitroglycerine-based warp core...

There was also mention of the Connie having saucer separation capability in the same episode, probably along the lines of using explosive charges to blow a chunk of the neck away.

That is what necks are good for.

I think the getting rid of the nacells was more of an last resort where they blew off the nacelles.

Yeah, I know that my cutaway Connie poster shows charges to be used for saucer separation. I don't think you're reattaching them without a shipyard after that.
