Re: Stats/Information on the new Enterprise
I think his point is that these things don't scale EXACTLY.
If you took a WWII destroyer and simply made every feature on it four times bigger, the result would not look like a battleship even if it was exactly the same length. Battleships do have bigger guns, but bigger guns don't look like small guns directly scaled up, if you see what I mean.
But next time you see it, take a good close look at those phaser turrets. I don't think they DO look like scale ups of the TMP ones. If you look carefully they aren't just bumps - they look like little functioning turrets to me. In fact I'm not sure the two turrets in each pair look identical...

Re: Stats/Information on the new Enterprise
To be honest I do not understand why the exact length of the ship is such a big thing. Watching the movie I never had the impression that the ship was actually GCS size. She seemed to be a bit larger as the TMP Enterprise but I put this down to the larger budget, better CGI etc. so you see much more of the ship than in previous incarnation.
Now we hear that the nEnterprise is probably about 725m. Well to be honest I did not suspect it but on the other hand I am quite ok with it, why not. Considering the enormous nacelles and multiple warp-cores I think it even makes a lot of sense. That's how a GCS size starfleet ship would look with TOS tech level, I am ok with that.
What I would understand is an argument about the aesthetics of the ship. Do not get me wrong I really like some parts of the ship - I think the saucer-section and nacelles are beautifully designed - but the neck section and the bow/deflector really look strange with odd curves and angles who just won't look good from certain viewpoints and somehow remind me of a failed car design I saw somewhere.
But maybe that why it is a good design, I just cannot make up my mind if I find her ugly or beautiful.

Re: Stats/Information on the new Enterprise
The only part I can't stand ascetically wise is the shape of the engineering hull at the back. I don't know why, but it bugs me.
As to engineering problems of the ship, the only problem I see is the neck. Because of the huge increase i size, there would be a huge increase on the stress at the neck connections. But, as there is a SIF (presumably), this isn't as much of a problem.

The main thing that bugs me is main engineering. I wasn't even sure that was it when I saw it.
Oh well.
Oh well.

Did the new Enill have phaser turrets?
I only remember seeing turrets on the Kelvin.

Lets just call her the En for simplicity.LaughingCheese wrote:Did the new Enill have phaser turrets?
And, she's got things that sure look like turrets.

Re: Stats/Information on the new Enterprise
You don't see them up close like on the Kelvin though.
Re: Stats/Information on the new Enterprise
If you watch when they shoot at the Narada at the end, you can see little blue bolts coming from the saucer.LaughingCheese wrote:Did the new Enill have phaser turrets?

However, it appears their main phasers are the TMP style banks.

Good idea.
I see, I will have to watch for that next time.stitch626 wrote:If you watch when they shoot at the Narada at the end, you can see little blue bolts coming from the saucer.LaughingCheese wrote:Did the new Enill have phaser turrets?

And I think we should pay attention to his second-to-last paragraph in his conclusion:
It is not my intention to ruin everyone else's excitement about the new movie. Every generation has its Enterprise, and for the new generation the decision has been made that this time the new movie replaces the existing Star Trek much in the sense of a total reboot instead of carefully expanding it. I won't tilt against windmills, but I keep an unusually critical distance instead of being a part of the hype.

And? I don't really see how that changes anything, and it certainly doesn't adress the fact that he's blatantly ignoring on-screen evidence due to his own personal dislike of the film.

Re: Stats/Information on the new Enterprise
For those who think that the new Enterprise is small... here's a shot from the first trailer of men working on the upper aft surface of the nacelle. You can see the sticky out wing things on either side. Look how big the men are compared to that nacelle. On the TOS Enterprise, the entire nacelle is about 45 feet across. How wide is this, do you think?

Re: Stats/Information on the new Enterprise
Yeah, I can see it as 700m long.

Holy shit that thing's massive!
It's one thing sitting here tossing numbers around, it's another thing to actualy see what those numbers mean.

On the Planetside Construction-I think that's done for initial construction. Remember in VOY, where we had a shot of the Utopia Planet Yards there was a Galaxy-class being built on the surface of Mars instead of on the shipyards?
